The photograph shows Collins Street just to the east of Swanston St. Some 10 cable trams can be seen in the view, along with some horse-drawn vehicles and one open-top motor car. It would appear that a person is boarding the nearest cable tram (Victoria Bridge) from the centre of the road. Trees have been planted between Swanston and Spring St. In the background are signs for Ruskins Studios, W V Dunn Dentist, Kodak Limited incorporating Baker House, Coles Arcade, and Broothorn studios - see reference. The Kew Historical Society's postcard collection includes views of Kew, Melbourne and Greater Melbourne as well as those including overseas scenes sent or received from Europe or the Middle East. They date from the 1890s to the 2000s.Modern postcard produced by the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria. The photo is of a replica tram in Victoria's Tramway Museum, and was presumably purchased for display purposes for an exhibition relating to transport in Kew, and in particular to the Kew horse-tram which operated from the Victoria Street Bridge to the Boroondara General Cemetery in Kew.This replica tram, constructed by members Alan Antcliff and Newton Williams in Mildura represents the open car used between Sydney Road and the Royal Melbourne Zoological Gradens until 1923. One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office.The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's tram network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Digital copy of an original mounted photograph showing the entrance to the Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery in 1913. The entrance was/is on the corner of High Street and Parkhill Road. The horse drawn tram from Victoria Street Bridge to the Cemetery can be seen to the left of the photo in High Street. Photograph - of a K class four-wheel or single truck tram on a PMTT route 14 (STRATHALBYN ST (Kew) - VICTORIA BRIDGE) tram service, at Harp Road and High St. The reference gives the tram based at Kew Depot in 1928. The tram was originally a Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust tram, though, by the time of this photograph, it has been re-lettered for the MMTB, which took over the PMTT in 1920. The photograph has been marked up for a submission possibly to either Council or the MMTB for a waiting room or shelter at this location. The wall of the Harp of Erin Hotel and a Victoria Bitter sign can be seen on the right-hand side. The original photo appears to have been torn. The River Yarra was a popular subject for photographic postcards. The postcards provide an interesting perspective of plantings on the banks of the Yarra at various periods. Small, sepia coloured real photo postcard of the River Yarra at Kew. The bird's eye view, presumably taken from Victoria Street Bridge shows the banks of the Yarra in the foreground densely planted with weeping willows. There is also canoe in the foreground. The expanse of lawn in the middle ground is that of 'Swinton', the tower of which can faintly be seen at the top centre of the view. Major floods recurred of the Yarra River on a regular basis. A flood in 1901 destroyed this house in Victoria Street, Abbotsford. Later print copy of an original photograph. Home of C/N Burgess on the south side of Yarra River. The buildings were washed away in a flood in 1901 The house was in the same location as that on which Handley & Tilly was later built. This would locate it on the north side of Victoria Street, Abbotsford between Burnley Street and the Victoria Street Bridge.
