Photo of Harry Tinson who was winemaker at Baileys in Glenrowan from 1968 until 1982. An ageing Alan Bailey (greatgrandson of founder Richard Bailey) sold the winery to Davis Consolidated Industries (mainly a gelatine producer). At the time Harry Tinson, with a Master’s degree in physical engineering, was in the corporate planning department of Davis. The board had decided it wished to diversify into wine production and Tinson was charged with the responsibility of finding a suitable target. He came up with Baileys, and was instructed to negotiate the purchase of a 50 per cent share in the business. Bailey said “all or nothing” ! The photograph was taken when Sunbury township did not extend far beyond Anderson Road to the west and Powlett Street to the east. The two homesteads are Ben Eadie and Craiglee, which were two of Sunbury's earliest vineyards that were established in Sunbury. James Stewart Johnson designed and built his concrete home, Craiglee, in 1865 where the previous year he had planted out his vineyard on the surrounding 26 acres of land.The property was on the east side of Jacksons Creek on Macedon Road. He concentrated growing Riesling and Hermitage grapes. After his death in 1896, his son Wilfred continued to produce wines until the late 1920s, when he pulled out the vines and concentrated on raising sheep for wool and meat. The Carmody family purchased the property in 1961 and in 1976 decided to replant the vineyard. Ben Eadie was built some time in 1863 and settled by the Eadie family who also were millers. The winery was built into the side of a hill close to the house but the Eadie family tended to concentrate on milling and retailing.In the earliest days of European settlement many wineries were established in the Sunbury area.Two non-digital sepia photographs have been mounted on cardboard. The bottle was donated to the Council by Hedley Elliott for an exhibition in the Art Gallery (George Evans Museum). Note that Goonawarra is misspelt on the label.Green glass bottle used for 1975 claret and bottled for the first Sunbury Fair. The label is printed in brown and cream and features a sketch of the Goonawarra Winery and surrounding area. There is a brief statement on the back about the winery and the background to production of the wine. On the back is a hand-written label, stuck on with clear tape giving an account of the origin of the bottle of wine, its donor and storage instructions. The Johnstone family were connected with the Craiglea Winery in Sunbury from 1864 to 1883. It was established by James Johnston, the father of Wilfred Henry. Charles Johnston took over the winery in 1885 and in 1897 he purchased 'Kignane'. A cousin ran Craiglea until 1905A photocopy taken from an older portrait of Wilfred Henry Johnston.
