bottle, C 1970's
Dross Drossou established a cordial factory in Orbost in the 1930s. He sold his cordial manufacturing business to Phillips and Stone, a Bairnsdale company, in 1948. Glass bottles were refillable until the 1960s, creating a demand for their collection and onsale back to beverage manufacturers via ‘bottle merchants’. A deposit on the bottles was added to all sales as they left the factory. The returned bottles were washed and the old label removed. The inside was cleaned by pushing the bottle onto a revolving brush. The reusing of the bottles went on until the bottle was broken or the top became chipped. Phillips & stone operated a cordial factory in Orbost. This bottle is an example of a product manufacture by a local industry no longer existing.A tall clear glass cordial bottle with a red printed label on the front of the bottle, It has a metal lid.On glass -"manuf. by Phillips & Stone, Bairnsdale & Orbost 52361 preservative added, artificially coloured & flavoured 850ml" On lid - "Lemonade"beverages phillips-stone bottle -

Photograph - Victorian Canoe Club, Pound Bend Tunnel [Warrandyte], 1930–35
Canoeing on the River Yarra at Melbourne was an important and widespread recreational pursuit for Melbournians, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. The Victorian Canoe Club was formed in 1912 at a meeting in Melbourne and its first committee elected in the same year. Records indicate that the Club continued into at least the 1950s .The photos in this album are historically and socially significant as a record of recreational activities in the first half of the twentieth century. A number of photographs in the album provide views of sections of the Yarra, as well as areas in regional Victoria, that may otherwise be unavailable. One of 12 sepia [faded] photographs of members of the Victorian Canoe Club. Ornamental biscuit, Phoenix Co, 1914-1918
This biscuit is called a 'Dog Biscuit' and was produced during WWI. It was part of a rashion kit to accompany another biscuit and a tin of Bully beef. The original owner was presumably a serviceman called Jack was and he created a souvenir for a loved one using this biscuit, accompanied by another biscuit with an inlaid photograph of himself. This object is a rare and precious piece. It is rare for items composed of edible goods to remain almost perfectly intact after a century after creation. The use of the biscuit as a souvenir, with the addition of a artificial flowers, is presumably unique and imparts great social significance to the item.Dry biscuit with artificial flower decoration. The flowers are of light green and cream coloured fabric, wire and are attached in the top right hand corner of the biscuit. There are fabric strips attached to the back and tied with cotton string through holes in the lower right corner.Inscriptions on the front read: "Phoenix Co. Melbourne" biscuit, dog biscuit, military rations, ww1, world war 1, world war one, the first world war, the great war -

Ammoniaphone, Dr. Carter Moffatt, Medical Battery Co, Voice Ammoniaphone and Box, Circa 1871-1900
The "Ammoniaphone" was developed by Dr. Carter Moffat in 1870 as an instrument to replicate the fresh Italian air and its qualities that seemed to assist with Italian vocalists. The Ammoniaphone was filled at both ends with a mixture of ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and peppermint oil, and the user inhaled the chemicals from the small tube in the centre. According to Dr. Moffatt, the Ammoniaphone was benefical to public speakers, Parliamentarians, vocalists, as well as assisting with bronchitis and consumption.Important to the collection due to its rarity and historical significance, as well as medical research capability.A long metal tube into which ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and peppermint oil were placed. The user inhaled the chemicals through the small tube in the centre of the object. It was thought to improve the voice through the inhalation of "artificial Italian air". Comes with the original box and instruction booklet."Medical Battery Co. 52 Oxford Street, London W"medical, quackery, voice alteration, consumption, ammoniaphone -
