The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. As far as we know there has not been a public display of the whole collection which numbers about forty photographs. The collection has been copied on to slides for the purpose of this meeting and to be retained as part of the Society's pictorial collection. Alistair Knox 1912 - 1986 is acknowledged as the founder of Eltham's mud brick building movement. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt. Originally labelled "Beauville Estate, Established 1936, Still Thriving 65 years on, 10th March 2001", the Beauville Estate Album contains colour photographs of houses in the Estate. They were taken around the time of the Beauville Estate’s 65th Heritage Celebration held on 10/03/2001 and donated to the Caulfield Historical Society shortly afterwards. Photographer unknown. In this respect it was the forerunner of the comprehensively planned housing estate of the post war era. The estate is distinguished by its aesthetic values, as is the earlier and comparable Hillcrest Estate, which are formed by a combination of restrained diversity in house styles, with the exception of no. 30 in the emerging International style, and by a landscaped garden environment. Joseph Arthur Bailey, described as a manager in electoral rolls, came to Surrey Hills some time before 1903. He was born in Brighton in 1873 and died in Burwood in 1929 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery. He was the son of George Bailey and Georgina Hardwick, who lived in Healesville for a time but 'retired' to Surrey Hills where they are listed at 'Claremont' in Mont Albert Road in 1919. Joseph married Eleanor Beatrice Greenhill in 1897. They had 3 sons - Rupert Aitken (who served in WW1); Kenneth Alan and Edwin George. Prior to living in Trafalgar Street they lived at 9 Victoria Crescent. This was taken to record part of the course of the former Surrey Hills Golf Club. The Surrey Hills Golf Club was founded by Mr Hugh W McLeod in 1894. The first president was Mr A W Harston. Mr William Meader was the first honorary secretary and the club champion for several years. Another notable identity was Mr. Harry Culliton, who contributed golf notes to "The Argus" for many years. As pressure for land for development grew, the club was forced to move. It eventually became the Riversdale Golf Club and its history is outlined in the book 'Riversdale Golf Club: a history 1892-1977' by John Arnold.A coloured photograph of a streetscape. Rhylstone Park in Thompson Avenue, Cowes, was the home of Mr Vaughan. Later run as a clock museum then a B & B until approx 2007.A brick house built by Mr Joseph Vaughan about 1890. This photo is another view of the brick Ticket Box (58.1) on the right side of main gates and next to the former Dane House. In 1999 the house was owned by Stawell City Council and used as the Community Neighborhood House. It was demolished some years ago. Built c1920 - Home of Mr and Mrs William James Donaldson. William James Donaldson married Kate Amelia Larard in 1901. He died in 1933 and the property passed to his wife and thereafter to their only son Allan Larard Donaldson, born 1917. The house was known as "Goodwood". Kate Amelia Donaldson was a music teacher. It is almost certain that it is William Donaldson and son Allan in the photo. Donor: Mrs Betty Margaret Donaldson, wife of Allan Larard Donaldson. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. It is aesthetically and historically important. "Roseneath's aesthetic value derives from its survival as a substantially intact bi-chromatic brick villa, distinguished by the symmetrical north and south facing bays and by its spacious grounds. Its historical value rests on its comparatively early date and link with Shire councillor William Millar. The choice of bi-chromatic brick, which was highly fashionable at the time, is also of note. After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. The house was built in 1913 for Mr James Rubira and named for his wife Emilia Tajouera Guidotti, an Italian opera singer. She was born in 1865 and died in Surrey Hills on 21 October 1950. James was born in 1863 in Allela, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and died on 8 November 1935 in Surrey Hills. They married in Victoria in 1892. They married in 1892. James's mother was a member of the Parer family. The Rubiras and the Parers were among a number of Spanish families who began to migrate to Australia in the 1860s. James' mother was Teresa Florentina Lluisa Parer. Many of the families settled in Box Hill and then Surrey Hills by the 1900s. John Butler Maling, retired farmer, built his home on the corner of his property which extended from Weybridge Street to Whitehorse Road and from James to Ross Street. From 1853 he lived in a simple farmhouse located near the present Ross Street until he had 'Ancyra' built in c.1889 from bricks made from clay dug from a quarry on the property. This was located in the now-park in James Street. John Butler Maling Snr was born in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire. He married Kate Conlan in 1882 and they had 3 children - Silas, Alick and Zillah. He died in 1912 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery. Often referred to as John Butler Maling Senior as he had a nephew by the same name. He also lived on a similar sized property known as 'The Willows', located to the west. He became the first Mayor of Camberwell. From c1936 til c1960 the property was used as a rest home (Ancyra Rest Home) and then a nursery (Pied Piper Nursery).This property is important as one of few remaining extant links to pre-urban Surrey Hills, and built from local material.A black and white photograph of a brick house with a slate roof and corrugated iron over the verandah and portico.
