Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.1). Photo of Joseph Post. Bertha Jorgensen It is a notable occasion for music lovers when Melbourne's esteemed 'First Lady' of the Orchestra steps out of her place as leader and is heard as soloist. Bertha Jorgensen gave her first public performance as a five year old prodigy in Castlemaine, where she then lived, and a few years later she began travelling each week the 60 miles to Melbourne for lessons with Alberto Zelman, Junior. At fifteen, still adorned with pigtail, she came to Melbourne with her family and joined his orchestra. Since then Miss Jorgensen has been constantly engaged in orchestral work, and in attaining the exacting role of leader of the Melbourne Symphony is holder of a unique position. No other major orchestra in the world is led by a woman, and many are the evidences of amazement expressed by visiting conductors. Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Capital Theatre, Bendigo. Thursday, 10th November, 8pm. This series of Concerts is arranged by the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Conductor and Soloist: Walter Susskind. Walter Susskind (with photo), During his two years as resident conductor of the Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Walter Susskind has left an indelible impression on music lovers by his conducting and his personality, both of which have endured him to concert audiences everywhere. Walter Susskind is now relinquishing his appointment of the permanent conductorship for the A.B.C. in Victoria to return overseas, and this final tour by the Victorian Symphony Orchestra for the 1955 season is also Mr Susskind's finale in Australia. An appealing future of these concerts to be presented over several provincial centres in turn will be the . . . Analytical Notes. Bendigo Concert Series Discontinued. The Australian Broadcasting Commission announces with regret that it has been found necessary to restrict the nimber of concerts presented in Bendigo each year pwing to the lack of sufficient support of these activities. Since 1947 the A.B.C. has presented a series of rour concerts each year in Bendigo. During these years artists who have appeared in the series include Ginette Neveu, Gyorgy Sandor, Erna Berger, the Robert Masters Quartet, Sydney MacEwan, Elena Nikolaidi, Michael Rabin, William kapell, Leon Goosens, Max Rosral, Sulvia Fisher, and many others of world standing. In addition, the Victorian Symphony Orchestra has given performances each year under such eminent conductor as Alceo Galliera, Juan Jose Castro and Walter Sisskind, while last year the seies included a visit by the Sydney Orchestra under Sir Eugene Goossens. While the A.B.C. in anxious to continue its policy of brining artists of world standing to provincial centres, includeing Bendigo, the quire considerable costs incurred. The Highesdt number of subscribers to a series in Bendigo was attained in 1951, when 350 season tickets were purchased. In all other uears, including 1955, the number has fallen below the required minimum, and ir has been decided not to proceed with plans for the 1956 season, although . . . Silk programs, at that time, were only produced for a very prestigious night at the theatre. Historical note: The town of Gisborne was named after one of the members of the first committee of the Mechanics’ Institution (renamed in 1872 to Melbourne Athenaeum), formed in November 1839. His full name was Henry Fyshe Gisborne 1813-1841. The program, crafted of printed silk with a silk fringe all around the four edges is unique in the program collection. The program reveals an interesting fund-raising entertainment held at the Melbourne Athenaeum theatre in 1884. As the theatre was available for hire by everyone in the Melbourne community, over the course of its history it was hired by a large variety of theatrical performers, political groups, sporting and arts groups, in addition to fundraising groups, as found here. Proceeds of this concert were donated to the Melbourne-based Sick Children’s Hospital and the Upper Macedon Episcopalian Church – an unusual combination of charities. The Mount Macedon area became a popular place for holiday- makers from Melbourne in the 1870s and many professional people built holiday retreats with beautiful gardens in the area. The development of the area created a further need for places of worship. The names of the people taking part numbered over 70, several having the same family names as those listed as members of the Melbourne Athenaeum at that time but there is no proof that the people involved with the performance were subscribers to the Melbourne Athenaeum. At the time the Athenaeum hall consisted of a large flat space requiring chairs to be placed in lines, with hand-written alphabetical signs to indicate the rows and individually numbered chairs. The hall seated 900 patrons. When the hall was used for balls, banquets and exhibitions all the chairs were removed and stored under the stage and in a room at the side of the hall. The layout of the hall can be seen in this photograph from the archives, taken in the early 1900s. This fringed, silk program was produced for a concert held on 9-10 October 1884 under the patronage of the Governor Sir H Brougham Loch at the Athenaeum Hall in aid of the Convalescent Fund of the [Melbourne] Sick Children’s Hospital and the Episcopalian Church of Upper Macedon. The evening of light entertainment comprised eleven solo musical performances and thirteen tableaux, some humorous, referencing biblical and classical themes from plays, paintings and operasm enhanced with painted scenery and a multitude of costumes.melbourne athenauem hall, the sick children's hostipal, episcopalian church -
