Crockery, Blue Cup Saucer and Plate, 1920s
This cup, saucer and plate are part of a tea set. It was given by Eva Carmichael, a survivor of the ship Loch Ard which was wrecked near Port Campbell in 1878, to Jane Shields, the young woman who supported her while she was recovering from her ordeal at Glenample homestead at Princetown. The two women remained friends after Eva Carmichael returned to her home in Britain and was married. Jane Shields also married and it was when her daughter visited Eva in England that she was given the tea set to take back home to her mother. Jane died in 1932 and Eva died in 1934 and the tea set was inherited by Jane’s daughters. In 1975 Jane’s daughter, Mrs Ann Fuller, donated a cup, saucer and plate to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The handle of the cup was mended. These items (cup, saucer and plate) are of high significance as they are closely connected to the wreck of the Loch Ard, and one of the two survivors, Eva Carmichael. Memorabilia connected to Eva Carmichael are precious and rare. These china items (cup, saucer and plate) are coloured royal blue and gold. .1 The cup has a gilt rim on the cup edge and base. There is a small crack on the side of the cup and the handle has been broken and mended. .2 The saucer is glazed on both sides with a small fault in the middle. It has a gilt band on the inner rim. .3 The plate is glazed on both sides with some evidence of scratching on the plate surface. China, Cup & Saucer, Eary 20th century
This is a porridge set which probably dates from the early years of the 20th century. Porridge bowls and cups were particularly popular in Scotland at that time and would have been used in households in Australia throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. These items have no known local provenance but are of interest as an example of the household china that was in use 100 years ago and was still being used for many decades after that time. They are attractive items and will be useful for display. These two items are a large cup and saucer made of china and used for porridge. The cup has colour floral and leaf scroll decorations inside the top rim, a piece of verse extolling the farmer and surrounded by black and white patterns, including farming implements, on one side of the cup and coloured farming implements in circles with the same verses in larger circles with a colour wheat sheaf in the centre on the other side of the cup. The saucer, more in the shape of a soup bowl, has the same colour floral and leaf decorations around the rim and the same farming patterns and verses in the centre. The handle has a black and white floral decoration The maker’s mark and name are on the bottom of the cup and saucer. ‘In God is Our Trust’ ‘The Farmers Arms’ history of warrnambool, porridge bowls -

Household, Souvenir Cup (Warrnambool’s 150th ), 1997
This cup was produced by Ken Sadler as a souvenir of the 150th anniversary of the settlement of Warrnambool. Ken Sadler was a potter in Liebig Street, Warrnambool for many years (end of 20th century and beginning of 21st century). Warrnambool was founded as a planned town in 1847 to provide port facilities for the produce of squatters who had settled in the area. The town centre was surveyed by William Pickering at the request of Superintendent La Trobe of Melbourne and the first land sales were held in Melbourne in July 1847. The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Warrnambool included concerts, race meetings, church services and the erection of an anniversary tablet on Cannon Hill. Ken Sadler, a well-known Warrnambool potter, made 500 of these cups which are now collectible souvenirs of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations. This one retained by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society is numbered 189. The 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool was an important event in the city’s history. This is a ceramic cup with a round base and larger rounded body with a round overhanging rim at the top opening. The cup is mottled green with an impressed image of a ship and lettering in white, gold and brown. There is some lettering on the bottom of the cup.‘Warrnambool 150th Anniversary 1847-1997’ ‘Sadler 97 189/500 Warrnambool’ warrnambool’s 150th anniversary, history of warrnambool, ken sadler, warrnambool potter -

Mentone Grammar School
The Syme Cup for Tennis, 1937
Cecil F. Syme was a 1930s Melbourne-based explorer and prospector. He was a son of David Syme, founder of The Age Newspaper, Melbourne. When Cecil’s brother Norman died in 1927, he left a wife and a six-year-old son, Leslie. Records suggest Cecil paid for his nephew, Leslie, to attend Mentone Grammar from 1936 – and that he donated the Syme Cup the following year. It was first awarded to Keith Goode. After leaving school, Leslie Syme enlisted with the Australian Navy. In I942, during World War II, he was killed when his warship, the HMAS Yarra, came under intense enemy fire. He was 21. Leslie Syme is remembered in our Avenue of Honour.Silver Cup on wood base -

Photograph, George Hotel demitasse coffee cup - images collection, 1995
The George Hotel in St Kilda was one of the largest and most well known hotels in Victoria and the largest in Melbourne outside the city. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, renamed the Seaview in 1976, it no longer operated as a hotel and fostered Melbourne's alternative and punk music scenes. It was de-licenced and closed in 1987 and redeveloped in the mid 1990s as apartments, with bars, cafes and shops at ground level and an art gallery and cinema. On 6 January 1996, Harry Hogg, a local photographer and a member of the Save St Kilda movement, sent the photographs of the demitasse coffee cup to the new owner of The George, Donlevy Fitzpatrick. His covering letter said: 'The reason for this note is to send you copies of photographs of a fragment of a demitasse coffee cup I unearthed recently from along the light rail in Albert Park. I regret the poor quality of the prints (I was funning a test on a 1000 ASA film in low flat light) but hope the contents of the photographs may be of interest to you.'Colour photographSide of cup: George Hotel St Kilda; image of warrior on horse Base of cup: Dunn Bennet's (Gold Medal) Hotel Ware. The Silver Standing Cup was made by Ernest Leviny c1860 and presented to Mr Charles Abraham Saint, editor of the Mount Alexander Mail newspaper, by the town's citizens on his departure from Castlemaine on 31 December 1863. Mount Alexander Mail report; 23 January 1864. This substantial silver centrepiece was the second masterpiece created by Ernest Leviny around 1859. It is decorated with highly detailed cast figures, fine embossing and chasing. This work of Australian Colonial significance reflects Leviny's rich European artistic background which he successfully merged with new Australian motifs, which epitomise the great wealth, ambition and pride at that time in the emerging, young Colony of Victoria.Semi matt surface albumen print mounted on cream coloured card with border around image drawn in pencil. Trophy
From 1884 College Cups were donated by the Old Collegians Association for the outstanding athlete amongst ‘present boys’ and ‘past boys’. It is obvious from written records and the inscriptions on the cups themselves that two cups were awarded to students – a Junior Cup and a Senior Cup.The Old Collegians Cup was a prestigious award presented in the early days of Ballarat College for private retention. At the Annual Sports Day almost the entire athletics program was devoted to the heats associated with the awarding of the College Cup (Senior) and the Old Collegians Cup. Competitors had to run in three handicapped races over 120, 250 and 440 yards respectively. So high was the regard for the winner of the Senior Cup that Old Collegians would refer to past events as happening 'in the year X won the College Cup'. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. Raymond Dawson Vaughan attended Ballarat College under Principal Major John Garbutt until 1909. He was one of the first students to enrol in the new Agricultural Science Course at Ballarat High School in 1910. he completed this course with credits and high honours. After leaving school he was involved in agricultural and pastoral pursuits at Lorcan in the West Wimmera. Ray served in WW1 and was killed in action, aged 25, on 9 June 1917 at Messines. Household, Cup Fragment
This fragment is a piece of a cup that came from the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street, Warrnambool, was opened in 1872 with John Tate as the first licensee. Two notable families associated with the Criterion Hotel were the Humm family, (late 19th and early 20th centuries) and the McGennan family ( from the late 1920s on) The name on the fragment is that of Theresa Lynch who was the licensee of the hotel from 1919 to 1926 and the owner for most of that time. The hotel was closed in 2008 and, following a fire, the building was demolished in 2013.This fragment is of interest as it is one of the few items we have that date from the time of Theresa Lynch and the Criterion Hotel. This is a curved piece, one half of a white china cup. The fragment has been broken and mended. The fragment has imprinted on it in a red circle the name of a Warrnambool hotel and its proprietor. ‘Lynch’s Criterion Hotel Warrnambool’ theresa lynch, warrnambool -
