Martin Peter Hansen, Director of Education 1928-1932. He was born in 1874 and began teaching in 1894. He resigned in 1895 but rejoined in 1896. In 1900 he left the department and taught at Wesley College for nine years - Senior Master. 1909 he rejoined the Education Department as Inspector of Registered Teachers and Schools. Later he was appointed Chief Inspector of Secondary Schools. He died in December 1932 aged 58.Certificate printed on beige paper. Major General Sir Alan Hollick Ramsay, Director of Education 1948-1960 when he retired. He was born 12 March, 1895 and began teaching in 1912. He enlisted in the AIF as a gunner - 21/07/1915. He resumed teaching on his return from the War in 1919. In 1939 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF as Commander Royal Artillery 9th Division. He was appointed GOC (Major General) of 5th Division. He returned to the Education Department, eventually becoming Director of Education and served under both a Labour and Liberal Premier.Certificate printed on beige paper. This medallion was awarded to Mirth Marfell for swimming. The award was given to students in Victorian schools for advanced prowess in swimming and lifesaving. Mirth Marfell was a student at Warrnambool High School in 1935 when she received the medallion. Warrnambool High School was established as an Agricultural High School in 1907 and, after a merger with Warrnambool North Technical School, it is known today as Warrnamboool College. Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell, was born in Warrnambool in 1919. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing. This medallion is of interest, firstly as an example of the medallion given to students for swimming achievements in the 1930s in Victorian schools and secondly because it was awarded to Mirth Marfell, a Warrnambool person who had a distinguished nursing career.Circular metal medallion . Obverse features raised semi naked figure holding a cloth across the lower torso with one hand and a palm like branch in the other hand, an oval shield with text and decorative sprays of leaves. The reverse features the back of a naked female figure with long hair and a trident holding the hand of a child half immersed in the sea, another child"s head is raised above the sea. A lighthouse is featured on the distant shore. ticketDemonstrates a range of tickets stamped ELECTRICITY SUPPLY COMPANY used by the Provincial Tramways of Victoria.Assorted State Electricity Commission Victoria tramway tickets 1930 - 1972. The tickets, known as "flimsies", have a value of 1, 1 1/2, 2 and 3 pence. The tickets are, with the exception of one, full length and have not been ripped from the stub. Some have an Alphabet identification followed by a date stamp. Others have either a 1 or 2 digit number. The ticket value is of a size that covers most of the destination section of the ticket, with the information being printed in black on a variety of different colored papers. The full length, un-nipped tickets with Row 1, ticket 3 "Secns re blank spaces" written in pencil on front of ticket. These educational publications covering a topical monthly theme and providing a slice "of the era" in general knowledge, was used by schools in Victoria as a basic starting point for a particular level of perceived knowledge. The general articles and extracts contained within, were not targeting a specific gender or socio economic sector but designed for all children at a particular stage of their development. This publication did have a format of: 1st page topical, e.g. ANZAC day scouting (U.N.), one page of regional Victoria, one page of poetry, one page of short stories, one page of world history and the last page of a song, complete with appropriate notes. These publications were produced during the second World War and made special references to it. This publication occurred during a period when the Education Department was highly authoritarian in its approach to State levels of learning. Fragmenting "special" schools like later "New Age" teaching methods and doctrines (home schooling) were repressed with considerable force.This binder full of monthly educational studies was particularly important to "hidden away" rural communities such as in the Kiewa Valley, especially at this point in time (World War II). The teaching methods used by local schools provided the necessary break through required by local school children to stop any adverse knowledge deficiencies due to factors of regional isolation. School children with in the Kiewa Valley would be able to integrate with children from all regions, weather in cities or larger towns. This hard cover (card) binder contains 11 monthly publications produced by the Victorian Department of Education for Grades 7 and 8 in the year 1947. Each issue has 16 pages with the cover page covering the major theme for the month. Each issue is placed within the folder by the folded middle page constrained by a thin cord.
