Barbara Seidel of Eltham has provided a copy of a photo of a group known as the "Eltham Campers" which included some of her relatives. Jock Read and Garnie Burges remember this group from the 1920's. They used to camp on the old pound site at Eltham Lower Park. They met in North Fitzroy and every A.N.A. weekend they cam to Eltham to camp. They had big tents and set up a stage on backs of their wagons or lorries. A concert was held on the Sunday night for local people to attend. Bridget was the daughter of John Wright MURRAY(1816-1867) and Mary SWEENEY(1833-1909). She married Hamilton DRAIN(1847-1886) in 1884 and they had a daughter, Mary Ellen DRAIN(1886-1888). Following husband Hamilton Drain’s death in 1886, and her infant daughter Mary’s death in 1888, Bridget married Michael Dillon in 1894. It appears that she and Michael had no children together. Electoral roll records indicate that Michael was a farmer and that he and Bridget lived in Research, Vic. Some damage has occurred to their monument and the Eltham Cemetery Trust would like to locate a next of kin or family member. Unfortunately, there was no purchase information recorded, only the following details; no next of kin. Benjamin Thomas Taylor, a resident of Eltham, was a Civil and Mechanical Engineer (CME). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' This card depicts the Yarra River at Eltham circa 1910. It was addressed to "Mr J. L. Brown, "Elthamville", Tinning Street, Brunswick" most probably from an extended family member. From the same collection as accession no 00779, (Pond near Eltham Park) and no. 00780 (Eltham, J.H. Clark Photo - dated 20 May 1911). Sending postcards to family and friends including short messages was a common form of communication in the early 20th century. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. Eltham Shire Council office built 1964 on the former site of Shillinglaw Cottage. In 1971 the offices were extended with a southern wing (to the left of the building) which housed the Eltham Library and planning offices. Taken shortly after widening of Main Road between Pitt Street and Elsa Court which was undertaken between February 1968 and August 1968. Image was most probably commissioned by Eltham Shire Council and taken by Hugh Fisher, photographer who operated from premises between Arthur and Dudely streets and was often contracted by the shire for official photographic work. During the period 1969-1971 photos were being collected for a proposed publication on the history of the Shire of Eltham as part of its centenary celebrations in 1971 (managed by the Shire of Eltham Historical Society and Alan Marshall). The publication was Pioneers & Painters (1971), edited by Alan Marshall. The document titled "Shows area sold to Woolworths" consisted of a panorama of three B&W photo prints creating a panorama of the frontage along Main Road (SEPP_0744) and a single B&W photo print of the Shire of Eltham offices and Hall on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road (SEPP_0737) along with typed and hand written notes by Ian McDonald. The panorama (SEPP_0744) was captioned in typewritten text "Old Shire Office and Hall, etc - Frontage of 285 feet along Main Road" and in pencil the date "4-1-68" The single image of the shire offices (SEPP_0737) was captioned in typewritten text "Main Road and Arthur Street Corner" In addition, the following handwritten notes in pencil: " I took these photos from the new fire station - the building in the middle is the old fire station - Moved to Research for the Scouts 1970" and signed "IMcD"This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Eltham Plumbing Supplies (Lennie Whiteway Plumbing) located on the right side of the street. It later became the Eltham Bookshop and sold cane ware as well. On the corner with Main Road is the local branch of the State Bank of Victoria. The building still stands and is the present day Westpac bank branch. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The photographs are a reminder of the rural nature of Research and Eltham and its rich heritage.
