A short version of handwritten letter on back - To the right of this arch was a mine field. On 18.12.1942 at approximately 11.00 am Alex Archer and a lot of others were in the mine field when one went off killing & wounding several. Alex and two others walked away without a scratch. A mate of Alex, Brian Gates, No 14827 R.A.A.F. aged 22 years was killed. He died in Alex's arms. Alexander William ARCHER No 40637 3 Sqd RAAF. Refer Cat No 2597 for his service details. Dame Gracie Fields, DBE (born Grace Stansfield; 9 January 1898 – 27 September 1979) was an English actress, singer and comedienne and star of both cinema and music hall. When World War II was declared and whilst recovering from surgery she threw herself into her work and signed up for the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). Fields travelled to France to entertain the troops in the midst of air-raids, performing on the backs of open lorries and in war-torn areas. She performed many times for Allied troops, travelling as far as New Guinea, where she received an enthusiastic response from Australian personnel. In late 1945 she toured the South Pacific Islands. In 1979, seven months before her death, she was invested a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the entertainment industry.Reproduced black and white photograph of female wearing army jacket with soldiers kneeling and standing in background. Photo Herbert Booker FIELD as a Senior Cadet prior to WWI, he had 4 years in Senior Cadets. Herbert enlisted in the AIF on 26.6.1917 age 18 years in the 25th Reinforcements 14th Bn No 7596, embarked for England 21.11.1917, disembark 5.1.1918, attends 4th Div Signal School, embarks for France 29.7.1918 to reinforce 13th Bn, RTA 1.11.1919, discharged from the AIF 14.1.1920. He enlists in the CMF on 3.5.1939 No V1629, appointed Lt 3.12.1937, transfers to the 2nd AIF 10.9.1942 as VX104280, joins the Interim Army 1.7.1947 till 7.6.1948, appointment terminated with the rank of Lt Col. Awarded the "Efficiency Decoration"Frame, brown stained timber with gold inner edge also decorated with copper wire. Timber mount with glass. Medal, Military Medal GV, Instituted 25th March 1916
Instituted in 1914, the Military Cross (MC) was issued for gallantry in presence of the enemy to warrant and junior officers of the Army who were ineligible (on account of their rank) for the Distinguished Service Order. During the First World War, it was also available to equivalent ranks in the Royal Naval Division and Royal Marines and it later became available to equivalent ranks in the RAF for acts of gallantry on land. The equivalent award for the other ranks for gallantry on land in presence of the enemy was the Military Medal (MM) which had been instituted in 1916 and, similarly to the MC, later became available to RAF other ranks serving on the ground. This medal was awared to Pte H. S Holgate for bravery in the field in 1917. Pte Holgate was killed in action at Zonnebeke 11 October 1917. Historical and social significance for schoolSilver medal with a swivelling suspension. features King George the V, uncrowned, in Field Marshal's uniform on the obverse. The medal reverse depicts the crowned royal cypher over the words "FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD" all within a laurel wreath. Impressed around edge are the recipient's details. The ribbon has a central stripe of thin red and white lines flanked by equally sized stripes of navy. Inscribed around obverse: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT: O[M]N: REX ET IND: IMP:' Inscribed in centre of reverse below royal insignia : 'FOR/BRAVERY/IN THE/FIELD' Impressed around OUTER edge of medal: '4303 PTE H.
