The sons eventually took over the garage and handled both coach building and general service work. ...George Smith came to Wodonga c.1885 and carried on a business as a blacksmith and wheelwright in Hume Street. He subsequently erected the very substantial Federal Coach Factory in High Street. In 1901 the Coach Factory was sold to Mr C. E. Jones, but within three or four years George Smith again found himself in the establishment he had built. In 1907/8 Marcus Buntz partnered by a G. F. Simpson took possession of the Federal Coach Factory. In 1912 Buntz bought out the interest of Simpson and engaged a first-class wheelwright to do the woodwork. In 1912 a buggy could be had from £40 and a sulky £18. The business over many years developed from a shoeing forge and wheelwright business to a more modern day garage, keeping abreast with mechanisation. Marcus Buntz was joined in the business by his three sons, George, an A grade mechanic, Edward an auto-electrician and Henry, a blacksmith’s striker. The sons eventually took over the garage and handled both coach building and general service work. The firm also maintained the Wodonga Water Pump for many years, ensuring the town’s water supply. In 1948 the old established motor garage was purchased by Mr Jack Mylon. In July 1960 the building became Wodonga Market, housing a butcher, snack bar, milk bar, fruit and veg, Bill Dunstan’s Boat Centre and an Auction Mart. These images have local significance as they document a long-standing business in central Wodonga.2 black and white photos depicting Buntz Federal Coach Factory at different stages during its period of operation,Photo 1: Above building: FEDERAL COACH FACTORY/ M.H. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and VillageWeapon - Harpoon, Early to mid 19th Century
... blacksmith's art for fashioning an item used during the early 19th century in the significant industry of whaling. Harpoons were used during a time when the world depended on the natural resources derived from whales; oil for lighting, lubrication, margarine, candles, soaps and cosmetics, as well as the use of the whale's bones for various other items such as corsets, umbrellas, fertiliser and animal feed. The item is significant as it was probably made between 1820 and 1850, after which a single fluke and toggle harpoon began to be used extensively in the whaling industry. Also coming into general ...A harpoon is a long, spear-like instrument used in fishing, whaling, sealing, and other marine hunting activities to catch large fish or marine mammals, such as whales. It accomplishes this task by impaling the target animal and securing it with barbs or toggling claws, allowing the fishermen to use a rope or chain attached to the projectile to catch the animal. The earliest known harpoons have been dated back to being made and used approximately 90,000 years ago. In the early whaling industry, the two-flue harpoon was the primary weapon used around the world. The two fluke harpoons tended to penetrate no deeper than the soft outer layer of a whale's blubber. So, it was often possible for the whale to escape by struggling or swimming away forcefully enough to pull the shallowly embedded barbs out backwards. This design flaw was corrected in the early nineteenth century with the creation of the one-fluke harpoon. By removing one of the flukes, the head of the harpoon was narrowed, making it easier for it to penetrate deep enough to hold fast. In the Arctic, the indigenous people used the more advanced toggling harpoon design, and by the mid-19th century, the toggling harpoon was adapted by Lewis Temple. The Temple toggle was widely used and quickly came to dominate the whaling industry. The hand-forged harpoon demonstrates the blacksmith's art for fashioning an item used during the early 19th century in the significant industry of whaling. Also coming into general use was a black powder gun to fire the harpoon rather than the early type that had to be manually thrown by a mariner from a row boat, of which the subject item is an example.Harpoon: a hand forged, double fluke, steel whaling harpoon with an arrowhead tip on a square shank. The shank tapers to a narrow round shaft with a split metal cone to accommodate a wooden harpoon pole. The harpoon was restored in the 2010s using traditional blacksmithing methods, with the shaft and cone added to the original arrowhead and shank. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, harpoon, whaling, whaling harpoon, fishing industry, whales, one-fluke, two-fluk, lewis temple, marine technology -

It began with an Osborne and Mitchell. After 1914 when mining declined, it became the Golden City Implement boundary and the name can still be seen painted on on the façade which faces the intersection of Marong Road (Calder highway) and Eaglehawk Road. The interior is a mass of used and un-used machinery scattered amongst modern lathes and more modern apparatus. The yard was a fascinating graveyard of past times, with old mining and agricultural scrap everywhere mixed up with coke and slag from the smelting sheds at the rear. A feature of the foundry was the manufacturer of cast iron lace. This document provides a historical and contemporary overview of the Osborne family's blacksmith and metalworking business in Bendigo, highlighting its longevity, operations, and significance: The business dates back to at least 1855, originally starting as a general store before evolving into a metalworking factory. The original founders were Osborne and Mitchell; Mitchell left early on, and the business changed hands several times before being acquired by Oscar Osborne (not related to the original Osborne founder). Oscar Osborne managed the machine shop and foundry, eventually acquiring it. His sons, Charles and Walter, now run the business with Stan, a descendant of the original founder. The current operators are Charles and Walter Osborne (brothers) and Stan (a descendant of the original founder but not directly related to the brothers). The business is known for its continuity and resilience, surviving as one of the oldest in Bendigo while others have disappeared or are newcomers. The workshop covers about a third of an acre and houses a large array of machinery and tools (nearly 200 between the three operators). The Osbornes pride themselves on traditional skills and methods, many of which are being lost in modern times. They are renowned for repairing a wide range of metal items, especially for antique dealers, and for producing high-quality crowbars and decorative iron lace for both restoration and new construction. Much of their work comes from Adelaide, and they maintain a steady demand for their specialized services. T he foundry and machine shop are considered landmarks in Bendigo, located on Eaglehawk Road opposite the Marong turn-off.The business was deeply embedded in the local community and history, with the Osborne name still prominent in the district.National Trust Survey Data Sheet and article from the Bendigo Advertiser November 4th 1981.
