The 150th celebrations of Eltham Primary School included the launch of this book to commemorate the event, titled "We Did Open a School in Little Eltham". The title is taken from a line in a letter from first head teacher David Clark who opened his first private school in a bark hut. This publication of some 262 pages far exceeds the standard of most school commemorative histories, both in content and presentation. The three joint writers are all parents of students at the school. Ian Anderson, Barry Carozzi and Tarja Fellowes have spent many months researching and writing. In the book they acknowledge the contribution of EDHS President Harry Gilham and of Peter Cuffley, great grandson of Eltham pioneer Thomas Sweeney, Many of the photographs were from the collection of EDHS. The school in the photograph is Bulla State School No. 46 and was originally known as the Government -funded Bulla Common School, built 1870 - 1871. With the passing of the Education Act in Victoria in 1873 it became known as Bulla State School No. 46. The original building comprised of a rectangular shaped bluestone building with a 3 roomed residence attached. As school enrolments began to increase in the district, a weatherboard classroom was added in 1881 and later extended in 1927 adjacent to the original building with a covered walkway between the two buildings. The modern portable classroom was added in the 1960s. Bulla Primary School closed in 1996 after much local controversy. The property is now privately owned. The children in this combined infant class attended Bulla Primary School in 1993. In rural schools it was common practice to combine a number of classes in the one room with the one teacher.The two pre-digital photographs were taken at the same time and feature an infant class in their classroom with their teacher at Bulla Primary School in 1993.
