Otto von Drehnen was a prominent Adelaide citizen from the late 1800s, a successful businessman. He was elected President of the Deutsche Club & appointed the Consul General for Austro-Hungary. He was subsequently interned in Camp 1. Documents relating to Otto von Drehnen, previous Consul General of Austro-Hungary & prominent Adelaide businessman, interned in WWII. Dr Frederich Kaempfe, a Chemist, was interned in Camp 3. He was captured in Iran on 15/09/1941 and transferred on the Rangitiki to Loveday South Australia. Else Oertel and her daughter Else-Lore were interned in Camp 3A from 1940. Her husband was not interned as he was on a business trip to Germany when war broke out. The Wied family were settled in Palestine upon the beginning of WWII. Being of German nationality, they were considered a threat to security by Allied forces & were interned in temporary camps, before being shipped to Australia. In Australia they were interned in Camp 3, Tatura, a family camp for enemy nationals. Many of the internees came with few possessions. This item is just one of the handmade domestic items fashioned in the camp from largely scrap materials to give some home comforts in the initially barren surroundings of the camps, particularly to those interned with families and young children. A theatre group was established within the Camp to present plays and concert performances and thus Die Nibelungen, a trnditional German Legend by Hempel was to be staged.
