A photo of a large group of teenage boys and men from Big Camp, 11-18 January 1969, at Lord Somers Camps. Big camp was for older Junior Legatees. This photo shows 27 people who took part. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring near the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Including using Lord Somers Camp in Somers for the camps.Melbourne Legacy provided the Somers Camp experience for different age groups.Black and white photo of Legatees and senior boys at Big Camp in 1969. Notes from the State Library's Trove collection on the murder of Iolene Sampson 28 years old on 3 Jan 1928 at quarry Road Mitcham and the subsequent court case on 22 Feb 1928.Iolene Sampson had been married to Ted Sampson for 15 months and they were orchardists near the corner of Quarry and Mitcham Roads. The Kleinert's had an orchard across the lane from them. Ernest Ambrose Kleinert, 20 years old, was tried for the murder of Iolene Simpson but was acquitted.
