Wandering on we came to the grave of the Bourchiers who previously owned our property Birrarung, for many years, I had met Jack many times in the ' 30s. Their family's name is retained by Bourchiers Road. Our attention was drawn in the distance to a beautiful flowering rosemary bush beside geraniums . To our surprise they were growing on the grave of Billy Roach-Pierson [Robinson] then [Ricketson] we did not know of her remarriage. Her parents lived at the Crest, Panton Hill where they ran the school. [ Steven Crawford Baes son was there for a while.] Kay, Billies mother lived at the Grey House in Diamond Street, Eltham and was our neighbour at Rath, Eltham. A long time family friend of Peter's mother and us. Barrie, Billies brother married Pam Chevallier a relation of the Chevalliers, they were later divorced, then he married Helen Kohn with whom I nursed, she was in Elizabeth Cottee' s [Exon' s ] group at the Alfred. They now live in Queensland. Barrie sadly wheel chair bound. The grave of Ewen Cameron MP of Pigeon Bank, who contributed much to the district in the early days and whose grandaughter Vera, an original Fellow of the College of Nursing Australia, [ Later RCNA] Who married Watershed Jackson, They lived at Pigeon Bank before moving to Albury. Another headstone that of Houghton, Ned's daughter Jessie and I were at Tintern junior school together, she is now Jessie Bull. No one knew where Kangaroo Ground was, but us for ages. Sauntering along the freshly mown grassy pathways, we noticed Bill Pellings Grave, marked with a Bronze plaque with pink artificial roses beside the inscription. Marion Erswell who with her husband Ambrose lived in Eltham at Willandra, their poultry farm where the Judge Book Village is now . She had taught Bill at school and said he was one of her brightest students at Dandenong. Bill later became Chairman of Kraft Foods. We were reminded of our wanderings in the cemetery at Worthing, England, where we discovered Pelling graves when hunting for Henty ones. Although only about twenty inches deep, the soil of this ancient volcano, its crater lost under subsequent weathering, was rich, deserving the name of "Garden Hill". Now native trees are taking over again. In Kangaroo Ground itself stand the inevitable Store, School and Church - and two Norfolk pines and a monkey puzzle tree." On November 11th 1926 the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground was opened. It is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most outstanding lookout towers. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people. There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future, Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. Reproduced on p21 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Mrs. R. Thornton notifies that she has taken over the Kangaroo Ground Hotel from Mr. Walker, and the house will be made attractive for weekenders, the table, wines, and spirits being A1 quality" - Advertiser 7 July, 1922" Mrs Ruby C. Thornton sold her interest in the Kangaroo Ground Hotel in September 1928 and moved away after seven years in the district. This photo is therefore dated between July 1922 and 1928. Other newspaper articles identify Mrs Thornton's first name. The lady to the left of frame appears to be taking a photograph of the car in front of the hotel. This may be Mrs Ruby Thornton taking a picture of her car in front of her hotel. A young boy with others standing near their horse and buggy look on. The property was destroyed by fire at 1.45 am on Friday 8 August 1930. The licensee was Mr Hugh Crichton who had taken over from Ruby Thornton. He and his wife just managed to escape the fire with nothing but their night attire. The property was owned by Mr Bruce Donaldson of Ivanhoe and had been erected over 60 years earlier (according to the Advertiser). Kangaroo Ground pioneers James Johnston (died 1895) with his wife Elizabeth commenced building this stone house on his Pretty Hill property, Kangaroo Ground in 1842. It was one of the oldest homes in the district till 1938 when new owner Mr Percy Cope, a master builder demolished the old building and a new brick building was erected in its place.
