Commercial artist, Keith Edwin Rash (1910-1985), studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School between 1923 and 1929. These artefacts are from his professional practice. Sign writing and ticket-writing bridged art and trade, with hand lettering applied to long-term signage and short-term promotional materials. At the Ballarat Technical Art School, sign writing, ticket writing, and house decoration were overseen by Thomas Raisbeck (1884-1970) from 1915. Classes were then successively taught by former students William Kenneth (Ken) Moss (1889-1921) from 1920 until his untimely death, Albert E. Williams (1899-1986) until 1928, followed by experienced, practising sign writer, Charles Emrys (Angus) Henderson (1899-1976), who had trained under Raisbeck. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the district working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Edward John Price (Ted)(1899-1974) was the third child of Edward Joseph and Annie Price. He lived a very industrious life in the area. When the new CRB road cut through the family land Edward John established a Corn and Produce store on a level area adjoining the new road . Along with his brother Charlie, Ted took up road contracting and formed Grange Road in 1923. They also took up contracts to metal the CRB road between The Gap and Olinda. Edward John married Myra Wilson in 1930. They lived in the first brick home built in the district. Digital copy of a paper or research report by John Hargreaves, titled "Ballarat Hotels - Past and Present", dated January 1943 looks at the history of Ballarat's hotel from a licensing viewpoint and their closure as a result of various referendums held in 1888, 1891, 1920, 1930 and 1938. Document lists the hotels closed, the amounts of compensation paid, the results of the polls and has sketches of some of the hotels, including the Vine Hotel, Royal Mail Hotel, Redan Club Hotel, Provincial Hotel, Bucks Head Hotel. Part of a larger document. Has on the last page a copy of a story in The Herald 14/5/1943, about the author, a teetotaller and his work that was passed over to the Ballarat Historical Society. Reports on the votes taken at the various dates. The original of the work is held by the Gold Museum. Copied by Alan Bradley - see Reg item 6380.
