Tool - Spirit Level, 1937-1955
Initially Elvicta was known as Elliot Lucas (hand tools)Ltd, and was established around 1937 based at 38 Summer Row, Birmingham. Around 1950 the firm relocated to Cannock, Staffordshire and by 1965 had moved again to their Church bridge Works also at Cannock. The Elliot Lucas Ltd Elvicta Cabinet and Tool factory as it was known employed over a hundred people and operated from the company's satellite works in Crickhowell southeastern Powys, Wales, near Abergavenny, in the county of Brecknockshire during the 1950s. The company manufactured a range of specialist pliers, nippers and pincers including the brands Elvicta, Electoy and Elect.A tool that is now regarded today as vintage, is collectable and highlights a time when tools were made by hand and how wood was predominately used to manufacture such items. It gives a snapshot of the time before the use of plastics and other synthetic materials which are now used to produce every day objects and tools such as this spirit level.Elvicta brand wooden spirit level made by Elliott-Lucas Ltd England. Photograph Fire Prevention Victorian Alps, Burning, Circa 1950
This photograph, from the 1950s, shows an Alpine Fire Prevention technique of "burning off" low levels of scrub to reduce the level of available fuel against any possible summer bush fires. The Alpine regions accumulate high levels of potential fuel (undergrowth and small shrubs) which if not reduced has the potential of breaking into a dangerous bush fire. The men in this photograph are not wearing any protective clothing. Their visibility to other firefighters is severely reduced by smoke. This photo is a snap shot in time when Occupational Health and Safety Legislation was in its infancy stage. This photograph details the fire prevention activities in the Victorian Alps under the management of the SEC Victoria. The level of undergrowth within the Australian bush needs to be under control to avoid the possibility of lightning strikes (during summer storms) igniting dry forests resulting in a major bush fire. Controlled fires within alpine regions are required not only to reduce the level of dry undergrowth but also to provide those various plant species requiring fire for regenerate. This method was used by the original inhabitants (Aborigines) as limited scrub fires were used to flush game and bird population for eating with the side benefit to those plants requiring that fire for regeneration. This black and white photograph shows an Alpine Fire Prevention technique of "burning off" low levels of scrub. The photograph is on 200gsm paper but it is not photographic paper. It can be assumed that the photo is not the original but a copy produced by the SEC Vic. Tool - Plane, Stanley Rule & Level Co, 18-05-1886
Henry Stanley established Stanley Rule and Level Co. in 1857. In the following decade steel hand planes began to replace wooden planes. This decorative plane is an 1886 model, with several options to adjust the plane to suit the work. The antique plane displays quality workmanship of the 1880s. It was designed for hard work, replacing lighter wooden planes that were unsuitable for the big jobs. It was made by Stanley Rule and Level, a firm renowned for its good quality tools and now operating as Stanley Black and Decker.Plane; Beading type maker Stanley Rule & Level Co, patented in 1886. Scientific Instrument, Theodolite: Early 1900s, c1860
The theodolite is used in surveying and measures vertical and horizontal angles. Placed on a tripod, it is used to find angles in road building, tunnel alignment and other civil-engineering work. The theodolite was used at Ballarat School of Mines in the surveying course. It is possible that this instrument was imported by Flavelle Bros & Co having been made to their order by a European instrument makerTheodolite (without a matching tripod) with four leveling screws at the base. Unknown - Model, Poppet Head Model
This scale model of a mining plant was made by Donald Douglas Mather of Talbot. The engine shed houses the winches, which raise and lower the cages carrying the workmen. The winches also control the water-Baling tanks, which are lowered into the pump shaft to clean the water. The Pump Shaft is part of the main shaft partitioned off for keeping the water down. The old style plant (or cas commonly known poppet legs), were all of timber construction and, when erected, straddled the main shaft. This scale model allows for steel construction, and is set over the shaft to permit an unobstructed view of the operations. The Bad level is where the workmen enter and leave the shaft. The staging platform on the first level is where the trucks and mullock or other material are wheeled out on rails and then tipped to form the mine dump. The top level is to allow for maintenance of plant. Donald Douglas Mather of Talbot worked in mines in Ballarat, and made the model of the poppet head. The poppet head is a replica of those used at many mines in Ballarat. Back in the 1850s Ballarat was a god rush town and many mining claims were made and poppet heads built this is a replica of those poppet heads which are a part of Ballarat's Heritage and a full size poppet head is erected at Sovereign Hill Theme Park in Ballarat. Mining is a huge part of Ballarat's history.A timber poppet head and engine room model. "This scale model - the modern construction of a mining plant - was made by Mr Donald Douglas Mather* of Bonnie Doon, Talbot, Victoria.
