Traffic in Sturt St was two-way on either side of the median strip which at the time did not extend fully between Lydiard St and Armstrong St. The photograph includes the gas street lamp in the middle of the Sturt and Lydiard Streets intersection and a telephone/telegraph pole on the right side. Several horse-drawn cabs in the photograph, along with some men. In the background are shops for Cameo Cigarettes, Tea Merchants, C Ekans? Chemist, J T Marsh Hatter, the Town Hall and Snows department store promoting a clearing sale. The photo has been taken from the Post Office Steps, c1890. In 1966 the Victorian Parliamentary Library established a newspaper clipping service. This sign, among many created by the Library, provided helpful instruction to Members of Parliament on how they should treat collection material. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS. Yields information about the accident that involved a tram hitting a tree after being derailed and amount of damage done at the time.Black and white photographic reproduction print of a photograph that appeared in The Age Newspaper on 3/12/1941 of an accident involving Ballarat Tram No. 24 running away following a collision in Drummond St. South and hitting a tree at the corner of Dana St. on 2/12/1941. Photograph has the heading and caption. Made in March 2000 by the State Library of Victoria from a copy of the newspaper held in their collection. A similar photograph also appeared in the Courier. The Age copy was in better condition. Hi Res scan added 25/3/2011.
