Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Frederick Gardner DAVEY was born in Bendigo & worked at Hume & Iser prior to enlisting. He initially enlisted as No V24918 in the 17th Machine Gun Regt in 1939 aged 22. Fred was discharged from the Army with the rank of Sgt in 10.9.1941. He then applied to join the RAAF & was finally accepted & began his service on 30.1.1942 No 410533. Finally he was posted to No 44 Sqd RAF Rhodesian which were Lancasters on 16.3.1944, so named because 25% of the aircrew & ground staff were from Rhodesia. Fred flew on the Nuremberg Raid on 30/31.3.1944 which suffered the costliest in terms of RAF losses in a single night. A total of 779 aircraft were on the raid & 105 aircraft were lost with 534 crew & 157 captured. His Sqd during the war had the 3rd highest losses in Bomber Command. Fred flew 35 missions in total & was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. He was presented with his DFC at an investure at Buckingham Palace on 18.5.1945. The first Bendigo Easter Fair was held on 10th and 11th April, 1871 and remains one of Australia’s longest running annual community events taking place over the Easter long weekend. Its purpose was to raise funds in aid of two local charities; The Bendigo Hospital, and The Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. The fair features events throughout the City with celebrations culminating in a parade on Easter Sunday. The parade features a variety of commercial and community groups including a large processional dragon which has been an integral part of the annual parade since 1892. The three principal golden dragons featured over the past 130 years are Loong (1892–1970), Sun Loong (1970–2019) and Dai Gum Loong (2019–present) which are housed at the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo. The Bendigo Easter Fair Society is custodian of the Bendigo Easter Fair and continues to support the City of Greater Bendigo’s largest festival. Each year the City produces a poster to advertise the upcoming fair and this one from 1943 reflects the war time sentiment which existed by featuring service men and women as well as the Chinese dragon. Beginning in the mid 1800s, photographers used glass plates to capture image - collodion wet plate and gelatin dry plate. Collodion wet plate negatives were in use from c1851 until 1880s. Gelatin dry plate negatives late 1880s - 1920s. Called an ambrotype is comprised of an under exposed glass negative placed against a dark background . The dark backing material creates a positive image.Man in photo is unknown in a uniform but not very serious so it could be a 'fun thing to do'. William Frederick (Fred) Jennings, the oldest son of William Jonathan and Matilda Jennings (née Michell) was born in 1901. He became a policeman and was stationed at Coburg for several years before dying suddenly in 1940, leaving his widow Elsie (née Egan) with nine children.
