This apparatus was devised by Hamilton Irving an English general surgeon in 1907. Supra pubic prostatectomy surgery was being performed more frequently due to improvements in procedures. There were issues post-operatively as dressings were saturated with urine and causing excoriation. The receiver was said to be easy to apply, comfortable to wear and effective in keeping the patient dry and able to move freely in bed.
