Personal Effects, lady's hat pins various x 14, c1880 - 1950
These hat pins represents women's fashion in the late 19thC and early 20thC. As the material used in the construction is not of a high monetary value it can be assumed it was everyday woman's apparel to keep the hat firmly fastened into the hair. It does indicate that fashion of the time was important and many women used their craftwork skills to create their own hat pins. This item is a reflection of the fashion mode of the late 19thC and early 20thC when long hair needed to be controlled by hair pins It is also an example of society's mores of tidiness 14 lady's steel hat pins in various styles numbered A -i A) 6x pearl tear-drop ; B) 1x pink metal beads;C) gold ball in 'oyster shell'; D) gold ball; E) pink plastic weave; F) silver metal ball; g) black bead; h) white ball; i) pale blue glass set in brassmoorabbin, brighton, early settlers, pioneers, cheltenham, craftwork, clothing -

Clothing - Clothing, lady's nylon stockings 'Prestige Wonderfoot'', mid 20thC
Prestige Limited was formed in 1922 by George Foletta to manufacture fine silken hosiery. The company had acquired the Atlas Knitting and Spinning Mills Pty Ltd which had been established in 1920 and produced "Prestige hosiery" from 1921. Prestige Limited merged with Holeproof Hosiery Company (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1964. Both were taken over by Pacific Dunlop in 1968. The Prestige name was dropped in 1978/79. George Gotardo Foletta (1892-1973), hosiery and knitwear manufacturer, was born on 30 January 1892 at Northcote, Melbourne, eldest son of Victorian-born parents Henry Gotardo Foletta, a stonemason of Swiss extraction, and his wife Gertrude, née Bright. Henry repaired the depression-ravaged fortunes of his family by starting a successful fancy goods commission-agency.....George persuaded the demoralized board to restructure around a quality-first marketing policy. By 1924, when George A. Bond & Co. Ltd ( Sydney) was liquidated, Prestige was back in the black. About this time the company became the first Australian knitter to make fully-fashioned silk stockings, outselling the best imported brands and giving Prestige dominance of the local hosiery market. With the arrival of British-trained Leslie Gough in 1926, Prestige entered its period of greatest expansion. By 1933 it was spinning its own silk yarn, had diversified into lingerie and commenced business in New Zealand; three years later it was spinning imported rayon filament into hosiery yarn.A pair of unworn lady's brown nylon 'service weight' stockings made by 'Prestige' Pty Ltd. in the original boxBox Lid: House of / Prestige / ‘monogram’ / WONDERSOFT / SERVICE WEIGHT “FOOT COMFORT’ NYLONS. Clothing - Clothing, lady's ribbon lace, shawl collar, c1950
A collar is the part of a shirt, dress, coat or blouse that fastens around or frames the neck and may be permanently attached to the main body of the garment (e.g. by stitching) or detachable. Names for specific styles of collars vary with the vagaries of fashion. In the 1930s and 1940s, especially, historical styles were adapted by fashion designers; thus the Victorian bertha collar, a cape-like collar fitted to a low scooping neckline, was adapted in the 1940s but generally attached to a V-neckline. This item is a type of shawl collar for a V-neckline that is extended to form lapels, often used to enhance cardigans, dinner jackets and women's blouses. Clothing - Clothing. lady's nylon gloves 'Simplex', c1960
These gloves are made from a warp-knitted cotton fabric called ' Simplex'. Cotton simplex is stronger than jersey (another knitted fabric) and does not fray. This makes it perfect for hand-sewn gloves. The gloves were made in Hong Kong then as now a place where fashions can be made cheaply because the cost of labour is inexpensive. Ladies' gloves for formal and semi-formal wear come in three lengths for women: wrist, elbow, and opera or full-length (over the elbow, usually reaching to the biceps but sometimes to the full length of the arm). In the late 19thC and early 20thC Gloves were expected to be worn for both daytime and evening wear with most types of outfits. Box, c. 1921
According to the Australian War Memorial, "The Red Cross maintained a policy of ensuring that comfort and entertainment for the wounded in hospital was onging and stated in its Gazette of December 1917 'Wherever they are, our boys will have a reminder on Christmas Day that the thoughts and sympathy of their people in far-off Australia are with them.' The boxes were usually packed in Australia and contained 'a pipe, tobacco, cigarettes, chocolate, playing cards, match-box, handkerchief and an attractive card, Australian in nature, conveying greetings from the Society.' (Gazette no 7, January 1918)." This particular example dates to 1921, after the war had ended. It is apparent that the efforts of the Red Cross extended beyond wartime years, possibly to those still stationed overseas or returned servicemen and women. This box is an example of charitable gift boxes which were delivered to Australian troops during the war by the Australian Red Cross Society.Wood imitation printed card box in two parts, rectangular in shape fashioned from two pieces of card folded and stapled on shorter sides.
