Copy of an article from the Bendigo Advertiser 12/5/1906. A miner, Henry Roberts was killed by the fall of a large piece of sandstone which fell with no warning. Prisioners did not have heating, beds, seats or eating utensils. A public meeting in 1862 called for the debtor's quarters at the gaol to be lit with gas, handsomely furnished throughout and that inmates be provided with a bottle of wine, one bottle of brandy daily and tobacco and pipes availabe at liberty.
