These binoculars were originally held in the Headquarters of the Pacific Islands Regiment in New Guinea. In February 1946, Colonel H. T. Allan OBE, MC, ED was presented with the binoculars to bring home as a souvenir. Refer Cat No 2755.4 for his extensive career and awards. During World War 2, they were used by a Japanese Army artillery unit.A tall and heavy set of binoculars comprising the binoculars set and a tripod base with wooden legs. The binoculars are attached to the tripod via a circular metal base plate with a small levelling bubble on the surface. The base plate is marked in degrees from zero to 360. Between each lens tube is an aiming device. The top of the tripod has a winding mechanism for raising and lowering the height of the binoculars. On the right hand side of the binoculars is a marked gauge which allows them to be tilted at different angles of elevation. Each of the eyepieces is able to be adjusted to fit the user's face. Belonged to Clarence (Clarrie) Edward Nicholls who was a communications person on the Sunderland Flying Boats. He was in the Battle of Britain. He was seconded to the RAF and flew out of Plymouth. He was shot down a number of times. He was in the peace keeping corps in Japan and then Korea, and then went into the full time Korea. At one time Clarrie and his two brothers were in New Guinea at the same time. They knew they were all there together but they could not find each other, and officials would not tell them where they were. He flew the last Sunderland back to Lake Boga. He wanted to buzz his parents in Wodonga so he knew he was on the way, but the authorities wouldn't let him. Clarrie Nicholls was a flag bearer for the Melbourne Olympics.Red hard covered book of 200 pages. Kenneth William Tweeddale BRIDGE DSC. Pre WW2 Kenneth worked in New Guinea from 1929 to 1941 as a Patrol Officer and then Assistant District Officer. He enlisted in the 2nd AIF No VX7794 on 10.3.1942 age 34 years 5 months. Initially posted too 3rd F.A Regt he was appointed A/Lieut on 26.5.1942 in “Z Special Unit”. Embarked for service in Aust mandated territory (NG) 31.8.1942, alloted to “M” Special Unit SWPA 7.5.1943, returned from special duties 11.9.1943, transferred to the retired list 8.10.1943. He was awarded by the U.S the “Legion of Merit” (Degree of Legionairre) for his work between Nov 1942 - July 1943 in the Sambare River and Salamaua area. He then joined the RANVR on 9.10.1943 in Intelligence and allotted to “Ferdinand Party” as a Sub Lieut. Embarcation dates are not listed but it appears he was in New Guinea in 1944 - 45. He was awarded the DSC for “Bravery and Enterprise in Recconnaisance Operations” on 16.2.1945. Appointment terminated in the RANVR on 8.1.1946. (SWPA) South West Pacific Area. During training he was posted to 8 differant units and rose through the ranks from Airman Pilot to W/O on 26.2.1945. Finally embarked from Cairns for New Guinea with No 8 Communications Unit on 7.4.1945, granted a Commission as Pilot Officer (P/O) on 1.7.1945, disembarked Townsville 21.11.1945, discharged from the RAAF on 14.12.1945. No 8 Communication Unit. There were 13 RAAF communication Units during WW2 which provided support roles including transport, supplying isolated Garrisons and support training.
