Large, purple Manilla folder with loose pages form a photo album

This album contains photos done on photographic paper while others are on exposed metal. Some are named, among them a Thomas or Edward Wickham, Fred Giles, Mrs. F Giles, Mary Humphrey Wickham, Jack Giles, Eliza Hornsby. Some of the photographs have been taken by Warrnambool photographers including Daniel Clarke. This album shows two different methods of photography which existed in the mid to late 19th century. With a number of the photos named it would suggest that there is some family connection between them which provokes an interest from a genealogical point of view. A photo album recording highlights of Legatee Donovan Joynt's life through photographs, newspaper clippings, and typed accounts. These have been catalogued separately to prevent them deteriorating any further on the glued plastic pages which were popular in the 70s and 80s. One of the final items was an extract from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin dated 9.11.1989. Photographic record of overseas places visited by local resident who was a member of armed service during WW2. Des Nicholson was born in Northcote in 1909. He enlisted in the military in mid 1940, having already served 2 years in the Citizens’ Forces. Before he signed up, he lived in Kew with his mother, Isabella. His enlistment documents indicate that he was employed as a transport driver, although his discharge papers state that he was a hairdresser. His photo album shows pictures of him demonstrating skills in that area in various deployments overseas; his enlistment documents refer to his unit being the 8th Division Petrol Company, while for much of his service he was assigned to Nursing Duties in the 2/7 Australian General Hospital. His overseas postings included travels through India to the Middle East, Egypt and Greece. While fulfilling these duties, he was an interested photographer, keeping records of the sights he saw in many of the places he visited, as well as photos of the military living conditions and the people he worked with on a day-to-day basis. The ‘tourist’ photos Des took would be of particular interest as a current-day comparison for those folk who might be familiar with the locations he passed through. After the war, Des again lived with his mother but eventually, in 1953, he married Kathleen Watson who lived in Eltham. The wider Watson family was well-known in the area, and the sisters Kathleen and Ruby were residents in the Glen Park area in Eltham North. After Des and Kath married they continued to live in Kath and Ruby’s house near where the current soccer and cricket sporting complex is now located. Ruby never married and they evidently stayed in the same place until, one by one, they each died in the early 2000s. Inside the album are a series of heavy paper pages with photographs and labels stuck on to them. Not all pages have been used, and additional photographs were stored among the blank pages. These have now been relocated to BK3. Photographic album containing 39 Colour postcards of Melbourne trams. The album consists of 30 leaves of dark grey heavy paper with three creases on left hand side of sheet, bound into a heavy bluey grey folder, embossed in gold 'Scrap Book" and bound with bluey grey string with two holes. The cover has been embossed with a the blue grey in swirls. Inside of back cover is a white label, "A New Star Product", with a please ask for No. with "425" stamped on. Postcards have been glued into the album. Entries have been kept to a single line - cards are able to be dated from buildings, whether the trams have marker lights, types of motor cars and general Melbourne history. This album contains a collection of portrait photographs taken in the later part of the 19th Century. Some of the photographers listed on the back include Stewart & Co., Bourke St East, Melbourne, Theodor Bloch Trafalgar St Nelson, A McDonald St George’s Hall Bourke St East Melbourne, G Kendall, Echuca and E. Goulter Prahran. The sepia photographs depict people of different ages. Cypress gardens was a leading holiday resort of its time. Bert and Flo Foster formed their ideas regarding its creation after a trip to the USA. It remained a popular holiday motel, boatel and reception place till it was demolished in the early 2000'sCollection of B and W and coloured photographs mounted on pages of a large metal spiral bound album. Original plastic overlays of each page have been removed. This album was prepared from photos take and collected by R Crockford of Benalla Victoria. Spr.R. Crockford VX48349 Joined the 2/8 Fld. Co. Engineers 19 Brigade 6 Div. later transfering to 17 Brigade after leaving Syria in August 1940 and served until November 1945. He trained at Hamilton and Puckapunyal before leaving for the Middle East.
