View looking across the front grounds of the former Police Station towards the weatherboard building on the opposite corner of Brougham Street which was once used as a Doctor's surgery by Dr R. Bradbury in the 1930s. The property was known as Cooinda. The Bradbury family also owned the houses adjacent to Napoleon Street. Succeeding Dr Bradbury was Dr R.B. Loosli, resident from 1947 to 1961. Early pioneer, George Bird Snr. arrived from England in 1852 and lived with his uncle, George Stebbing. He worked for him as bricklayer's assistant in building, among others, the Anglican and Methodist Churches in Eltham. In 1862 he purchased land in the east end of Pitt Street bounded by Eucalyptus Road and Wattle Grove and established a mixed farm and orchard. The date has been selected to coincide with the time when the gardens are likely to be at their best. The Central Victorian Goldfields area has been selected because it offers a wide range of gardens open to the public. From this range we have chosen three gardens which we think will be of great interest to members and their families and friends. These are the gardens: • "Buda", Castlemaine One of Victoria's most famous historic gardens. The mansion which was the home of the Leviny family for 118~ years is also open for inspection. • "Badger's Keep", Chewton This is a cottage garden (complete with 100 year old cottage) with a great diversity of plants. • "The Springs", Sedgwick A country garden also with a great array of plants The cost of the bus is $9.00 for adults and $5.00 for children. There is an additional charge for entry to the gardens, $2.00 each for "Badger's Keep" and "The Springs": for "Buda" it is $3.00, $1.50 for pensioners and $1.00 for children Each of the gardens has plants for sale. Gulline Brothers was a general store in Bacchus Marsh located in Grant Street, on the corner of Grant Street and Sydney Street. The store was originally opened by John Jory in about 1890. At that time it was advertised as being located on Maddingley Road. It was later taken over by Horace Hussey and William Grant Morton trading as Hussey and Morton, and later solely as Morton's. In the early 1920s it was sold to the Gulline Brothers and traded under this name for many years. The building has had multiple uses and occupants since the Gulline Brothers ran their business there. Carucan Real Estate sales history March 1994, December 2000, September 2009The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999.
