David Staig Jnr established this business in 1927 on the corner of Canterbury Road and Revers Street. He lived at 355 Canterbury Road, one of a series of shops (with living accommodation) owned and built in c1885 by Thomas C Hyde. G Staig (farmer) was the first in the family to occupy this, followed by James Staig (carpenter), then David Staig Snr (blacksmith) and David Staig Jnr. Bill Steiner was the chief mechanic at The Principal Garage; his apprentice Frank Senior eventually bought the business from David Staig and it became Senior's Garage. In 2020 there is a Shell service station and a Coles Express on the site. The Staig family were long-time residents of the area and this photo documents part of their business history. The untimely death of Principal Keith Jones paved the way for the appointment of decorated Vietnam veteran Neville Clark who valued the School’s character-building ethos and, whereas Jones saw academic results and sport as paramount, Clark believed these were only part of the education of a well-rounded individual. To this end he extended the function of the House system which now had a leading role in pastoral care, rather than just being for sporting purposes. The arts became more prominent and the Gregory Fish Library and a new swimming complex were built. (taken from '90 Years in the Making')

In 1945 the Reverend Harry Griffiths, who worked for the Methodist Inland Mission in Alice Springs, saw the need for a boarding facility for children of families living in remote areas in Central Australia who needed access to schools. He and his wife established Griffiths House, on a site in the town centre, and for many years it became home for students from all over the Outback, including many young Aboriginal people. In the late 1950's the Rev Fred McKay, successor to the Rev John Flynn as Superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission, lobbied the United Church in the Northern Territory to build and expand on this important start. Together the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches embarked on a missionary venture to develop St Philip's College - a new, larger residential hostel which would one day become a full boarding school. An ideal site - 22 acres of bush at the junction of the Charles and Todd Rivers and backing on to the Telegraph Station National Park - was secured and after six years of planning, construction began in 1964. Fred McKay led the legendary work parties comprised of volunteers from all over Australia who travelled to Alice Springs, paying their own way and volunteering their expertise, time and labour, to turn a dream into a reality. This fantastic tradition continues today, with work parties arriving each mid-year holiday. On 13 February 1965 the first boarders moved in to St Philip's College. For the first 24 years, therefore, St Philip's College operated as a residential hostel only. The College’s ninth Headmaster, Mr Christopher Tudor, arrived in 1986. He and the Council Chairman, Mrs Jan Heaslip, judged that the time was right to complete the original plan to turn St Philip’s College into a fully fledged independent boarding/day school, serving not only “bush” families, but also the growing population of Alice Springs. The then College Council embraced the idea and three years of frantic, determined preparation and planning commenced, culminating in an extensive $2 million building program in 1988. Some photos have been taken by Peter Payens of Ringwood Studios, 36 Whitehorse Road, Ringwood, WU-7609, probably for the Ringwood mail newspaper. From The Ringwood Mail, 8 June 1961 - "Part of the Commonwealth Technical Training Week, the Mayor, Cr Robert Horman, performed the official opening of a display at the Ringwood Technical School. Present in the official party were Mayoress, Hon. WER Garrett, MLC, and Mrs Garrett, the Town Clerk, Mr Fred Dwerryhouse, and the President of the School Council, Major-General LE Beavis, CBE, DSO, and Mrs Beavis."

In October 1939, on the sudden death of his father, Headmaster Charles C Thorold, son, John Jeffery (J.J.) Thorold, a 26-year-old accountant and sole beneficiary and executor was suddenly responsible for 42 students. Numbers had dwindled during the Depression and the situation was so dire, J.J. put the School up for sale. Fortunes changed when the parent of a boarder offered financial support and together with the skeptical backing of Francis Wellington Were, father of J.J.'s step mother, Jessie, the School numbers grew during the war from 50 to 280. The majority of the newcomers were boarders and evacuees from northern Australia as well as England. J.J. adopted the title Principal and worked tirelessly to build the school. He briefly appointed Arthur Burnaby as Headmaster before his search for a permanent Head resulted with the appointment of Lionel Ashley Large in 1945.

Maurice Copland was the Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines when he died aged 40. It is believed that H.H. Smith, Principal of the Ballarat Technical Art School, was responsible for this plaque. "The design for the proposed Memorial Tablet to the late Principal Mr Maurice I. Copland is respectfully submitted for your approval. It is estimated to cost in oxidized copper and polished blackwood 8.00 pounds." (Ballarat Technical Art School Principal's reports, 26 August 1921) The Ballarat Courier reported on 18 November 1922 :... The tablet had been executed by Mr H.H. Smith and his staff, to whom it was a credit, It would permanently remond them of one of whom they could not think to highly. ..." The tablet was erected just outside Maurice Copland's office, above his chair. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Camp Westlake was built by Collingwood Technical School in 1967 and was officially opened on 22 September 1968. The camp was built by staff and students of the school with finance from various school sections and from materials donated by interested people and firms. It is named after Mr. F.R.Westlake and Mrs. Westlake who were staunch workers for the school. (From J.F.Barberis}Booklet of 15 pages with gold cover, A4 sized. Electrical Engineer Graham H. Beanland was Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines from 1976-1982, and Deptuty Principal of the School from 1975-1976. As an electrical engineer graham Beanland's experience includes the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SEC). Prior to his appintment to the Ballarat School of Mines in 1975 he was an instructor in Electrical Engineering at the Footscray Technical College. The Stokes family settled in this area of Eltham in the 1940s and were associated with the Eltham Christian Church. In the 1970s this church had met in temporary premises in Eltham. Lots of the original 1920s subdivision remained south of Nyora Road and a number of these lots were utilized for the Eltham Christian School, which was established by the Eltham Christian Church in 1981. The school operated on this site until 2000. The premises were owned by the Nillumbik Community Church who were in operation till November 2010 when the Eltham Baptist Church commenced a lease arrangement until the site was purchased by them in April 2012. The building is constructed of brick and timber with a balcony on two sides that looks over an expanse of grass.
