McKinnon was a small community in East Brighton settled mainly by market gardeners but it had a State School, Churches, a hotel opened by Thomas Bent's father, Post Office and some shops. After WW1 land close to the railway line began to be sold and new homes and various shops were built. A Progress League was well supported and new hall built. McKinnon Rd Shopping precinct did not prosper as expected and some attribute this to the failure to secure the Hoyts picture theatre c 1925. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Gas light and candles were in common use because Electricity did not come to Bentleigh until 1916 and several Fire Brigades were formed in the Shire. The Railway Hotel in Sunbury was owned and operated by the Edwards family until Dawn Edwards died in 2004. It is situated on the corner of Station and Evans Streets and over the years has undergone many changes to accommodate the changes in liquor and gaming laws.A black and white photograph of the Railway Hotel, renamed The Olive Tree. The building is sited on a corner block. it is a two storey building with seven windows on the upper floor and eight on the ground floor as well as a doorway.
