Inspected by George Rawlings on 6.2.2013. The smaller fossil is related to the modern starfish, has 5 petals, secreted eggs from holes at the top. The mouth was underneath with rows of teeth. 1641.1 is a large sea urchin fossil (echinoderm) originally covered in spines. It is possibly from Turkey and 4 million years old. Found at Point Hicks. Probably part of the root of the tree. This is a type of petrified wood that has had all of the wood cells replaced with calcite mineral. After exposure to the ultraviolet light of the sun for a few years, the petrified wood has turned dark. ( info. from John Phillips) This certificate was a letter of introduction to be used when James Massey Herbert travelled overseas.The Herbert family is/was a prominent Orbost family. They were some of the early settlers in the district. The Julian Smith direct blood transfusion pump was invented by Dr Smith in Melbourne in the late 1930s. Smith founded St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne and was known as an inventor and photographer as well as a pioneering surgeon. His blood transfusion innovations were adopted worldwide during the 1940s. This belonged to Dr Bill Rawling's and was in a medical bag that he was used in the 1940s and 1950s. The game has its unique form, with shipwrecks, lost in the outback, hazardous landings and high seas being some features. The leather tumbler and dice are with the game. Also, with the game there are two newspaper articles, one by David Horsfall the other by Leighton Rawlings giving a detailed description of the game. During WW1 passports had been temporary - War Precaution. The War Precautions Act 1914 required all persons over 16 years of age, on leaving Australia, to possess some passport. The Passports Act of 1920 made permanent a passport system Australians had tolerated during the war because they believed it was temporary. Passports issued by Australia were issued only to "British subjects" and were described as "British Passports". This wasn't changed until 1949. An entry indicates that he probably visited the U.S.A.
