A meeting was held in Gardner's Hall, Beech Forest, for the purposes of considering the advisability of having butter factory established in the Beech Forest district. It was eventually agreed that a butter factory should be established, that provisional directors should be appointed, and upwards of 400 shares were taken up immediately. A second meeting was held on 20 May 1902 of about 40 dairymen. The meeting became a meeting of shareholders resolving to expedite the registration of the company and other preliminary matters. The election of directors then took place. Another meeting of shareholders held on the 15 July 1902 resolved to purchase a property and have the by-laws accepted. Mr James de Graaf in 1929 with his 1925 T FORD. James’ father Jacobus de Graaf arrived in Melbourne from Holland in 1853 and married Eliza Twite, aged 16 years. James married Caroline Kink in 1885 and came to live at 13 Charles Street, near Elgar Road soon after. James rode to and from work in Richmond until the train timetables were suitable for his work schedule. He then would put his bicycle in the guards van and from Richmond would still have to ride a distance. Eventually he worked in the timber trade in Box Hill. One of his recreations was the training of gun-dogs and he also boarded gun-dogs for some local owners. A black and white photograph of a man standing in front of a Ford motor car. Petrol rationing was gazetted in May 1941. Australia's lack of fuel storage options and the diversion of tankers bringing fuel here forced the government to begin rationing. Initially it was proposed that consumption should be reduced by 50% but this was modified to 1/3 reduction. People had to apply for a petrol licence and this was then used to obtain ration coupons. Initially coupons were issued on a 6 monthly basis but this was reduced to 2 monthly and allowed people roughly 2000 gallons per year. Coupons allowed for 1, 2, 5, 10, 44 and 100 gallon amounts depending on need. eg. private, commercial, farm use. Rationing was strictly enforced until 1942 but remained in effect until 1950.WWII Fuel Ration 1 Gallon Tickets: 1 sheet of rectangular shaped tickets on cream card with red and green print and perforated edges. On a red background in red print is "1 One Gallon". At the top in green print is "Commonwealth Liquid Fuel Control Board". The Australian Commonwealth emblem and Motor Spirit Ration Ticket. Issued under National Security (Liquid Fuel) Regulations. In the centre is "Valid only until 30th Sept 1946 Not Transferable". M&MTB Season Greetings Card 1926 – 1927. The card consists of a heavily embossed brown cover with the MMTB logo on the front cover, with a printed sheet internally and tied together with a green ribbon. The photographs have been overlaid with a gold borders and the message has been printed in gold ink. An experienced printer estimated it would have taken some two hours to hand set the message, the press operator another two hours to get the registration correct before printing it and after printing allowed up to four days for the gold ink to dry before handling the paper again. This is certainly a work of art in terms of printing. Whether it was done by the M&MTB’s internal printing office is unknown. Of the view it would have only been sent to “select” people. Surrey College was opened in early 1892 by Rev. Dr Frederick Darling who had been the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canterbury Road. He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1908 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. land in front of the building was subdivided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. Sepia photo of 26 men and boys and one female against a background of a two-storey brick building. This is the rear of the Surrey College. There are 4 additional figures in the background and an additional house can be seen beyond the property boundary. Many of the boys wear or hold caps or boaters. The 2 men in the back row on the right are wearing academic gowns and mortar boards. The gentleman with the beard on the end is Rev. Frederick Darling, the Principal of the college. This item is part of a collection donated by Pte Neil Ernest Swainston (3801127) who was called up for National Service but was only in the Australian Army from 24 Apr 71 to 20 Oct 72 a total of 183 days. Reason for Pte Swainston’s discharge: Having completed the prescribed period of service in the ARAS (NS). During service Pte Swainston did 5 months with Recruit and Corps Training and regimental and rifleman duties with Infantry until his discharge.Two-part perforated document from Department of Labour and National Service signed by P H Cook, Secretary, bearing Registration Number 21765955. Addressed to Mr N E Swainston, 37 Leamington St, Reservoir, Victoria and date stamped 18 Feb 1971. This typed pro-forma document is a call-up notice instructing the receiver to appear at the Combined Services Recruiting Centre, 301 Flinders Lane, Melbourne at 7:30 pm on 25 February 1971 to appear before a medical board.
