The "Lorna, Bob and Elsie" in the inscription are probably Elsie McCorkell, her son Robert Hayward, and her daughter Lorna McCorkell.A very small photograph which has been made into a souvenir/postcard. The photograph is a view of Sussex Street, Linton, looking south-west. On the right of the photo are Ching's store, R. N. Sandow confectionery shop, a house next to it, and the first Bank of NSW building. Two houses are further down the road past Gillespie Street. On the left of the photo are the Edinburgh Bakery and a store with a verandah on the corner of Gillespie Street. The photograph is glued to a beige-coloured card which has a decorative edge cut into it. A printed border surrounds the photograph, and the words "A View at Linton" are printed underneath it. The card appears to have had the right-hand edge trimmed with scissors. Because of this, an inscription on the back of the card has been partially cut away. Priscilla Nelson, born 1869, grew up at Happy Valley and married James Nelson (the second son of Robert Simeon Nelson and Mary Ann Dawe) in 1890. Priscilla and James had six children - James, Theophilus, Norman, Pearl, Mary and Violet. James established a carpentry/undertaking business on "Church Hill" in Linton (near the Presbyterian Church), but after his brother John Nelson died in 1900, he inherited the Nelson premises in Sussex Street which had been built by his father, and he moved his business and family to this location. This photograph shows Priscilla Nelson with her grandson Theo (son of Theophilus Nelson). The photograph is understood to have been taken in 1939. During World War II, the School Committee organised the digging of trenches at the school as a precaution against enemy air raids. The trenches were filled in at the end of the war in 1945. The Linton fire station can just be glimpsed on the left side of the photograph. A horse-drawn cart, with a man sitting in it and another man at the side of it, is in the background. A message from an unidentified writer is on the back of the card, it is dated 1918. John Hartley Roberts was born in England and migrated to Australia with his parents in 1853, when he was fifteen. He married Mary Ann Ellis in 1863. He was Head Teacher at Linton State School from 1867-1877. He became Victorian Inspector of Schools and later went to Tonga to establish the educational system there.
