Photograph of John Williams an Australian Army serviceman, this is one of a set of four (refer to item 00150). Williams is accompanied by five other servicemen of the 32nd Battery, 23rd Field Artillery Brigade. A note on the reverse of the photograph states "the other chaps are from Brims, the last place I was at in Victoria" and is dated 2/8/1916. This photograph was taken at Amesbury, Salisbury Plains, England. Printed from a digitally scanned file copied from the original photograph. -

Heliograph
Signalling heliograph which has been manufactured using a variety of military hardware items. Presumably this heliograph was improvised in the field as a result of damage to a standard issue item. This heliograph has parts which have been sourced from other standard military issue equipment, for example, knobs from cooking pots. The item uses the mirrors which are normally found in the standard issue heliograph. This heliograph has two large mirrors (for long distance signalling) and a smaller mirror (for short distance signalling). The mirrors are mounted on adjustable arms for positioning and aiming.no markings to note -

Uniform which is in the form of a 'one piece' clothing item with long sleeves and long trousers. Not unlike what is commonly referred to as 'coverall'. This item of clothing is manufactured from a 'camouflague' cloth made from 100% cotton.The item is labelled with the following inscription "Stewart & Heaton Clothing", "QUALITY UNIFORMS & WORKWEAR", "100% Cotton". The rear of the label has care instructions and the note "Made in Australia". -

United States Army standard issue infantry heavyweight webbing waist belt as worn in World War 1. This is an example of a 'trophy' belt, complete with a souvenir collection of metal insignia, badges and buttons which are attached to the belt. The belt has brass fittings however the original buckle is missing. There are a total of 83 various allied military insignia, badges and uniform buttons from the World War 1 era, 56 metal insignia and badges and 27 metal buttons which are mostly of Australian, New Zealand, Canadian or British origin. Belt manufactured by M W & S Limited of England in 1915.The reverse side of the belt is stamped "M W & S LTD., 1915" and has an "L" stamp and the Defence Department "/|\". The belt reverse also has the following name in black handwriting "A Paxino 9781 2211". Note A Paxino was associated with Frankston RSL Sub Branch for many years. -

Tablets, Atabrine, ca 1940s
Unusual World War ll souvenir consisting of a small bottle containing a number of "Atabrine" tablets which has been mounted on a wooden base. These were originally issued to RAAF Leading Aircraftman, Frederick Charles Carey, service number 116991. "Atabrine" was extensively used as a preventative measure to protect servicemen serving in tropical areas from Malarial infection. "Atabrine" is a proprietary name for "Mepacrine" which was one of the first substitutes for "Quinine" a naturally occurring Malaria preventative. Larger doses of "Quinine" and "Atabrine" is also used to treat the effects of Malaria. The wooden base of this item has a label with the following inscription: "W.W.II ATABRINE", "THE S-W PACIFIC SERVICEMAN'S ANTI-MALARIAL TREATMENT", "F. The diary contains notes relating to Miller's service with the Australian Army in Palestine, Egypt, Libya and Greece. The pocket book has a folding cover and is covered in a buff coloured linen. Originally issued by the UK Home Office (Air Raid Precautions Department), date of publication unknown (however presumed to be World War 2 era). This edition was published by the authority of I. F. Johnston, Commonwealth Government Printer, Canberra with acknowledgement that it was reprinted with the permission of the Controller, His Majesty's Stationery Office, London. Small booklet produced by the Australian Branch of the Red Cross Society, Headquarters and Central Depot, with guidelines for making donations of goods such as clothing, linen, blankets, bandages, books and food items to the Australian War effort and instructions for knitting woollen items of clothing intended for defence personnel on active service. The booklet is not dated however it is from the WW1 era and has twenty pages.The booklet front page has the following text: "RED CROSS SOCIETY", "AUSTRALIAN BRANCH", "Headquarters and Central Depot" and a note printed in red "When forwarding parcels, send by post complete duplicate list with number of each article to Officer-in-Charge." The Red Cross symbol is featured in the form of a red +. -

Card, Christmas
A folded cardboard printed Christmas card with paper insert from a soldier stationed in Egypt. The card has a small, sepia coloured photograph of an Egyptian scene showing some pyramids attached to the front and has a ribbon tied in a bow threaded through the cover and insert. A handwritten note "Wishing you a merry Christmas and a bright New Year with best love and wishes" is written on the insert opening, on the opposite side of the insert opening is a printed message wishing the recipient a merry Christmas. The card is addressed to Dear Rene from Les Suitor, dated November 14th, 1915.The card front page is printed in sepia tones: "Greetings from a soldier boy in Egypt", "1915 - 1916". -

A loose pack of 53 sheets of printed writing paper distributed to service personnel for the purpose of writing to their family and friends. This stationery is printed in red ink with a ruled writing area above which is a letterhead. The letterhead features the names of the charitable organisations involved in producing and distributing the stationery. The reverse side of the paper has ruled lines printed vertically in blue ink. The paper is approximately 8 x 5 inches in size and is a buff colour.The paper has printed letterhead with the "AUSTRALIAN COMFORTS FUND", "VICTORIAN DIVISION", the ACF insignia and the note "With Which is Affiliated". The affiliated organisation names are also printed, being "R.S.L War Service Fund", "Y.M.C.A.", "The Salvation Army" and the "Y.W.C.A." -
