This style of beret with Rising Sun badge was worn by CMR armoured regiments until 1955 when the badge was replaced by silver regimental badges. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. History of the seven versions of the Rising Sun hat badge.Two sided hinged timber look box set containing replicas of the seven versions of the Australian Military Forces (Army) Rising Sun hat badge from 1902 to the current version from 1991. The badges are mounted on a foam and black cloth background. The Rising Sun badges are able to be removed from the cloth background. Printed in black ink on the inside cover of the box is a history guide to the badges from 1902 to the current deisign. An early version of the Rising Sun badge containing bayonet and swords mounted over a crown with a rising sun background is also printed on the inside cover. Mounted on the outside of the front of the box is a gold coloured larger version of the current version of the Rising Sun badge. A gold coloured plastic Rising Sun badge is attached. The seven fold khaki puggaree has an Army Christian Chaplain's badge attached on the front. The hat has a brown leather chin strap and brown leather sweat band.Stamped on the sweat band in gold lettering: '(upwards arrow), MOUNTCASTLE, 1991, MADE IN AUSTRALIA, 57'. The embroideries were machine chained onto colourful cotton sateen (often mistakenly thought to be silk) and usually bear the words 'Souvenir of Egypt' and a year date. Most have a distinctly Egyptian flavour and show the pyramids, camels or date palms. Others show images associated with different armies (such as the Australian Rising Sun Badge, New Zealand General Service Badge or British unit badges) or nations (such as the Australian coat of arms). However, during WW2 they were usually embroidered on black velveteen and the variety of images was not as great as had been available during the First World War. These types of souvenirs were very popular with Australian troops; they were easy to send home and were colourful. Badges such as this one were issued to soldiers by the Department of Defence to indicate they had returned from active service. It showed they had helped the war effort by serving their country. Sometimes returned soldiers were wrongfully accused of showing disloyalty to their country because they were not seen wearing a military uniform so wearing the badge helped avoid this. A number was often stamped on the reverse and a certificate was provided as authentication.
