The company R. Fowler Limited was established in Ultimo, Sydney, in 1837 when Enoch Fowler (1807-1879) came to Australia from Ireland and is known today as the oldest pottery still in operation in Australia. They were mostly known for producing bottles, jars, and pipes. The pottery was originally located at Abercrombie Place on Parramatta Street, Chippendale, NSW before they relocated to Glebe in 1847. Later the pottery manufactured building materials such as tiles, pipes, and chimney pots. As the business grew, they moved to Parramatta in the 1850s. Enoch's son Robert (1839-1906) had joined the company, and took over its management in 1873, changing the name to “R Fowler Sydney” in 1880. Robert, introduced the black under glaze trademark with the archer as shown on the subject item. He went on to opened further sites at Marrickville and Bankstown, with the company becoming R. Fowler Limited in 1919. The factory at Thomastown, Melbourne was opened in 1927. Fowler also owned a Pottery somewhere near Lithgow, where they produced clay pipes that look like salt-glazed Earthenware pipes. There have been numerous developments to the company over subsequent decades, and the company was still operating in 2002 but is now owned by Caroma Industries Ltd, manufacturing only sanitary fixtures. An item made by an Australian company during the first half of the 20th century and quite rare today. The item is significant as it gives a snapshot of the early development of manufacturing companies in Australia. This informs our social history in Australia marking Australia's evolution into an independent country and no longer a colony of England. Early Australian homes were built with outdoor bathrooms and toilets. A commode chair was a convenient and discreet design to save trips outside in the dark, creating an early form of indoor toilet. The commode chair was designed to look like any other household chair and fitted in with other bedroom furniture. The toilet bucket or chamber pot was hiding beneath a false seat and a lid was provided to cover the pot to help prevent odour and spillage. The bucket would be emptied each morning and washed out. This commode chair belonged to the great great grandmother of the donor and has been kept in very good condition. It was originally one of a pair of two chairs. The Robert Fowler Ltd Pottery was established in 1837 by Irish immigrant Enoch Fowler (1807-1879) in Marrickville, Sydney; his son Robert managed the business from 1873. Initially, the company mainly supplied the building and industrial trades but after the First World War, demand for domestic clayware grew. The company opened a second factory in Thomastown, VIC, in 1927. They are still operating today as one of Australia's leading bathroom products companies. These are two pennants awarded to the winners of the Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association (perhaps the Warrnambool division) in 1980 and 2003. The winners were presumably the members of the St. John’s Bowls Club (associated with the Presbyterian Church, Warrnambool) as these pennants come from their collection. St. John’s Bowls Club was prominent in Warrnambool in the 20th century but was disbanded in the second decade of the 21st century. The Henselite company that sponsored these trophies is an Australian company that is the biggest manufacturer of lawn bowls world-wide. R.W.Hensell was the first to produce the plastic bowl in 1930 when the company was formed. These two pennants are of interest because they came from the St. John’s Bowls Cub in Warrnambool, a club no longer existing. Bowls is a very popular sport in Australia. These are two pennants from the Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association. Both are triangular in shape and made of felt cloth. One is white with a dark blue edging stitched on and dark blue lettering stamped on. This Boer War book was written by Robin Droogleever. It is a comprehensive history of the 3rd and 4th Victorian Bushmen Contingents and gives biographical details on everyone who served in these units. Many of the men in these units came from Warrnambool and the surrounding districts and many had been members of the Mounted Rifles or the Western Artillery units before enlisting to serve in the Boer War. One of these was Major Joseph Dallimore from Lake Gillear and his diaries are used extensively in this book as a primary historical source of the events of the war.This is an important reference book detailing the history of the 3rd and 4th Victorian Bushmen Contingents in the Boer War. This book contains many references to the servicemen in the Boer War who were in those units and who came from Warrnambool and district This is a hard covered book of 706 pages. Painted from Gardenia Road. The extensive farm complex on the right. (Western side of Gardenia Road). was demolished in 1972 for housing development. Buildings shown are cowshed, hay barn, engine shed and stables. Painted in the late afternoon, the lengthening shadows and lowering sky, could presage the ominous fate awaiting the farm with development. The Ziebell Farm was known as “The Pines” and sadly none of the many that proliferated there remain. Today they would be equivalent to those at the cemetery, having been planted at the same time. The Mont Eltham Pot Belly Stove History The Mont Eltham Pot Belly Stoves were first manufactured in the 1960s at the Burrowes family business The Lyn Iron Foundry in Coburg Victoria by Barry and his father Charles Thomas Burrowes. The manufacture of The Mont Eltham Pot Belly continued in Victoria as The Mont Eltham Stove Co. by Barry and Glenda Burrowes in Montmorency and later in Thomastown. The castings were produced by leading Melbourne foundries, Cox & Rosetti , and Anderson & Ritchie.
