Uniform - Honorary Colonel Fairbairn, 1980 circa
This tunic was worn by Sir David Fairbairn KBE DFC when Honorary Colonel of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1981-83. Sir David served with 21st Light Horse prior to World War Two. During WWII he served with the Royal Australian Air Force flying Spitfires in Britain and Europe and later in the war, in the Pacific theatre. Following the war, he entered politics, holding the federal seat of Farrer from 1949-1975. He was Minister for Defence 1971-73. Sir David was Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands 1977-1980.This object is well provenanced, complete and representative uniform worn by an honorary colonel of the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment, a man who gave exemplary service as a serviceman, politician and diplomat.Service dress tunic, polyester summer, with yellow cord lanyard, officer badges of rank, 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles collar badges, silver Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) buttons, and pilot qualification badge (wings). The 8/13 VMR was raised in May 1948 and was a participant in the Anzac Day marches in the district from that day forward. The sailor is John Neale wearing his WWII RAN uniform; the airman is Jack Larkin wearing his WWII RAAF uniform. The soldier (as yet unknown) also had WWII service. The colour party commander is Lieutenant Ian (Kiltie) McKie; the flag bearer is Hal Slaney.Photograph of social and historic interest to the Albury community showing citizen soldiers including returned servicemen who had volunteered for the Citizen Military Forces in the period immediately following the Second World War. Ormond Andrews (b 1894 d 1987) was an original ANZAC who enlisted from Orbost. He lived at 19 McLeod Street in Orbost and opened Andrews Mensland in Nicholson Street, Orbost. From Allan McKenzie - "The other person in the photograph with Orme is my grandfather, George Piper from North Fitzroy Vic who was a pilot with the RAAF in WW1. Orme and George were very good friends in later life."This item is a reminder of a well-known Orbost identity.Two framed b/w photographs of Orme Andrews. 2420.1 is a photograph of two airmen in uniform - one standing (most likely George Piper). Uniform - RAAF Jacket and trousers, 1940s
This RAAF uniform is believed to have belonged to Flying Officer Russell Miller, the son of William and Muriel Miller of Warrnambool. Russell Miller attended Warrnambool High School and worked for the Warrnambool City Council before enlisting in World War 11. He was killed in flying operations over Germany in 1944. Died 28 Sept 1944. Remembered at Rheinburg War Cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. More info @ https://cwgc.org/find/find-war-dead This uniform is a poignant memento of one Warrnambool's brave heroes of World War 11.1 The jacket is made of navy blue wool with a rever collar, four front pockets, eight buttons with air force insignia and navy cloth lining. The two sleeves have metal insignia and black and cream braiding. Above the front left pocket is a stitched blue and white applique. The jacket has a cloth belt with a rusted metal buckle. .2 The trousers are made of navy blue wool with two pockets, a buttoned fly and there are six buttons evenly stitched around the waist band. A portrait of a former Junior Legatee, Noel Shiels who had enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in World War 2. It was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). Research on NAA.gov.au and DVA confirms it was Noel Lindsey Sheils Service No 430062, who was born 31 March 1924 in Preston who joined the RAAF when he enlisted on 4 December 1942, he became a pilot and his rank was flying officer and was posted with the 37 Squadron. His father was James Howard Sheils Service No 158 of the 1st Bay AFA who died in May 1931 leaving his wife and 5 children. Uniform - Department of Supply Cap, 1971
Established in 1950, the Department of Supply headquarters transferred to Canberra in January 1968 and was dissolved in 1974. It was superseded by the Department of Manufacturing Industry and Department of the Special Minister of State. The Department was a Commonwealth Public Service department, staffed by officials who were responsible to the Minister for Supply. The department's main function was to support Australia's Navy, Army and Air Force in defence production, research and development, purchasing, transport and storage. The Department was also the Commonwealth Disposals Authority. Finally, the Department was responsible for the Australian Antarctic program. Bendigo was the site of an Ordnance Factory and manufactured and reconditioned naval guns and mountings, turbine gears for large ships, general heavy engineering work, large fabricated structure and missile handling equipment. The factory was managed in 1970 by R.I.M Moss. The department may have had an office in the former Bendigo Post Office now the Bendigo Visitor Information Centre.Blue, felt or wool peaked service cap with woven band and plastic strap. Orient Line Dinner Menu, Orient Line Dinner Menu Thursday, 18th July, 1940
This menu would have been printed to distribute to guests attending dinner on the Orient Line, which embarked for the Middle East in 1940. The dinner was held on Thursday 18th July of the same year. Signatures on the reverse of this document were signed by Ken Williams, RW Sterrett, MR Campbell, J.H. Christie, JH McKinnon and F Finch. This item relates closely to a photograph of the 3rd Squadron, in RAAF uniform, boarding the Orient Line.This menu is an item of ephemera dating to the World War Two era. Items such as this are ordinarily lost over the passage of time. As the item contains signatures it is possible that further research and interpretation could be done regarding the men it relates to. The item is therefore of historic and social significance and has good interpretive capacity.Card with printed lettering centrally spaced and folded along horizontal centreline. There are hand written inscription on the front and reverse in pen ink.On the front, top: 3 Sqn RAAF boarding for the Middle East. On the front, lower left there are markings under and to the right of the printed word 'tourist'.
