This photograph is showing a procedure performed by an RDNS Sister in the home of an elderly lady.Education was an integral part of Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) from its inception in 1885, later called Royal District Nursing Service, (RDNS). Only Trained Nurses were employed by the Society, and on visits to patients they taught the necessity of hygiene and cleanliness, as well as the need for a good diet, to bring about good health. Doctor’s lectures were later given at the MDNS home to instruct patients and their families on prevention of disease. Education to patients continued throughout the years regarding health care and the use of equipment in the home. In 1961 Education programs commenced at MDNS with Sisters receiving In-service education. Staff could also apply for scholarships to further their education outside of RDNS. At RDNS many programs were run, including: a Post Basic Course, Cardiac Rehabilitation Nursing, Haematology/Oncology Nursing, Palliative Care program, Diabetic Stabilization Program, Leg Ulcer Management Program, HIV/AIDS Nursing Care, Cystic Fibrosis Home Support, Veterans Home Care Program, Breast Cancer Support Program, Continence Management Program, Stomal Therapy Program, In-Home Lactation Support Program and a Community Nursing Education Program extended to student nurses from hospitals and to other nursing organizations. RDNS staff attended several hospitals to observe and learn special care needed to some clients, e.g. to the Austin Hospital to learn the care required for paraplegic and quadriplegic clients at home and to Mount Royal Hospital to observe the care of clients in the rehabilitation ward.This Black and white photograph is showing Sister Liddalow, of the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), linking up a home dialysis unit into the left arm of an elderly lady. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Walker rail motors were a type of diesel railcar operated by the Victorian Railways. After World War 11, the Victorian Railways undertook a major rebuilding program known as Operation Phoenix. One of the first tasks was the upgrading of passenger services on country branch lines. An initial order of twelve 102 HP railcars, six 153 HP railcars with trailers, and twelve 280 HP railcars was placed with Walker Brothers, England. The power units were manufactured in England, but the units were assembled in Victoria. The first rail motors were delivered in 1948, with additions to the fleet running through to 1955. According to a Victoria Railways Memorandum issued on 24 May 1949, regarding the allocation of the new 102 HP Walker Diesel Motor Rail Vehicles, No 10 was to be allocated to the Wodonga to Tallangatta line as soon as it was available. No 10 entered service on 22 November 1949. The passenger rail motors had room for 18 First class and 22 Second class seated passengers. Wooden crosses were installed in the grass verge of the Shrine in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. It was called the Field of Remembrance. These photos show some of the crosses, and with The Shrine in the background. The Field of Remembrance was publicised in editions of the Answer and featured on the cover of the October 1995 edition. The field of crosses was part of "Australia Remembers 1945 -1995". Crosses were available without charge (but by donation) at kiosk near the Shrine and names and unit numbers could be added and the cross placed in the Shrine grounds. The crosses were later gathered and burnt with the ashes being scattered on 11th November 1995. In the April 1997 edition of The Answer a poem was published that was written about the crosses. These seven photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio c1970s. The two units took turns each year to host the event and on this occasion was held at the RAAF School of Radio, Laverton. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. MAJ Donald Ridge was probably on this occasion was the 2IC of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, He was subsequently promoted to the rank of LTCOL was the CO of the unit from 1972 to 1973; and continued as the CO of the renamed Army Survey Regiment from 1974 to 1975. This piece of fabric in the design of the Republic of Vietnam’s flag was cut from a roll carried by Military Assistance Command Vietnam operatives when they went around the villages, compounds and outposts. As part of the ‘Hearts and Minds’ program, they would cut off sections and hand them out to anyone who wanted a bit. Some pieces became flags, some head scarves, some were even used to wrap babies.
