This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Document, Meeting of the Assessors of 1939 War Memorial Thesis Competition held at the Shrine of Remembrance on 23.12.47 at 4 pm, 1947
After the second world war there was a decision made to create a memorial for the 1939-45 War at the Shrine. A competition was held and 53 entries assessed. The first prize was shared between two submissions and the third prize money was also awarded. These two documents show that Legatee Kemsley was one of the Assessors who decided the basis of design for the memorial. The notes of a meeting of the Assessors show that Mr W. Balcombe Griffiths, Mr Marcus Martin, Colonel Kemsley and Sir Edmund Herring (Chairman of the Shrine Trustees) were present when the winning design was chosen. The design was later completed as the Forecourt in the shape of a paved cross, built in 1953, and the Cenotaph surmounted by a statuary group and the Eternal Flame. The memorial was dedicated and the flame set alight by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on February 28 1954.A record of the decisions made by the committee that chose the design of the memorial for the 1939-45 war that was built as the Forecourt, the Cenotaph and the Eternal Flame at the Shrine of Remembrance. Legatee Kemsley was on the committee. Two photos of Legatee Hugh Caffrey in 1995. Event and reason for the photo is not known. It is believed that he was Hugh William Caffrey with Service number VX120388 who served in the second world war in the 2/12 Australian Infantry Battalion. Born in 1921 in Maffra. From his medals, he served in the Pacific in the Second World War, as he has (from left to right) the Pacific Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, The Australia Service Medal 1939-45, and last is the 1977 EIIR Silver Jubilee medal. Document, Eligibility for JLC (H24), 1949
After the second World War Legacy understood there was a need to redefine the criteria of people that they help. There was discussions about whether the deceased serviceman had to have served overseas or whether they could have served in any capacity. Legatee Cremor proposed the motion at the General Meeting on 9 May 1949. The motion was: 'That the eligibility rules of JLC be amended to provide that the dependents of any deceased member who was attested for service in the Armed Forces of the 1939-45 War be eligible for Legacy benefits.' He also prepared a two page document of the arguments for the changes. A second document lays out the arguments against the motion. A file copy of a 2 page letter to the President supports Legatee Cremor's motion, the signature is indistinct so it's not known who wrote it. The arguments against included that the extension of eligibility would greatly increase Legacy's workload and budget required would increase 10 fold. They estimated that the men of the '1914 War' would be retired by 1965, and that there weren't enough men from the '1939 War' to make the decision. The notation H24 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Booklet, The National War Memorial of Victoria (S2) : An interpretive appreciation of The Shrine of Remembrance (1914-1918) and the 1939-1945 War Memorial, c1955
A booklet produced about the Shrine of Remembrance. Its full title mentions the 1939-45 memorial and 'Including a full description of the many features of the Memorial together with its history and thirty six photographs.' The exact date is unknown but was after the Queen dedicated the World War 2 memorial in 1954. Item was with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. (01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01211, 01649, 01650).Details of the Shrine of Remembrance published for the public. It is important to note it mentions that Legacy had an important role in promoting the construction of the original design over alternate proposals (of a civic square or a hospital). An outing by the widows club to visit a memorial to servicemen and women from the Woodhouse-Nareeb area. The photos show a group of ladies who attended and the plaques and memorial board. The plaque says 'These trees were planted by district people in memory of servicemen and women who died serving their country in the 1939-45 war, including nursing sisters who lost their lives in the java seas and on Banka Island. Dedicated 1978, Sister Jeffery 'Lest We Forget'. The memorial board says 'World War 2 Soldier Settlement Woodhouse-Nareeb area. Arthur LINDSAY (1912-1990) Born Melbourne Arthur Lindsay studied informally under Rupert Bunny, and John Munro in 1933, and held his first Exhibition in 1938, with Peter Cox, at Riddell Galleries. In 1939, he left Australia to tour Japan, but stayed on, accepting a position with a publishing company in Hong Kong. He served with the Hong Kong Medical Corp during World War Two and was interned at Pootung Camp, Shanghai, from 1941 – 45. He held an exhibition of his internment paintings in Melbourne in 1946. Lindsay returned to Hong Kong after the War, and supervised an Advertising Agency in Singapore, Kuala Lumpar, and Bangkok. In the 1950’s he travelled to Europe, United Kingdom, Spain and France. Returning to Australia Lindsay moved to Castlemaine in 1969.
