Photos of a procession of widows and legatees to the Shrine in 1992. These photos were in a scrapbook of photos from 1992. The pilgrimage was led down St. Kilda Road by the Hawthorn City Pipe Band (it may have started at St Paul Cathedral as there is a church service prior to the pilgrimage). A junior legatee is the flag bearer of the yellow Legacy flag. Sir Weary Dunlop can be seen in the march. President Swan and the President of the Widows' Club, Inez Bruce, are seen carrying wreaths to be laid. This is an annual event for Legacy widows, sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday. It is usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is usually the first week in September. Legatee Donovan Joynt at the opening of the Puckapunyal Sportsman's club that was named after him. The notes, dated March 1983, could have been for a newspaper article. "IT'S A HELPING HAND... for one of Australia's most distinguished soldiers outside his own memorial at Puckapunyal. Sapper Mark Drummond of Seymour, a member of 21st Construction Squadron, which built the Memorial, holds an umbrella and commander 3rd Military District, Brigadier Geoff Cohen of Canterbury, wheels Lieutenant Colonel Donovan Joynt VC to lunch. Lt Col Joynt, 94, donated more than half the cost of the $130,000 Donovan Joynt VC Memorial Sportsman's Club in the background. Photo taken at the opening of the Puckapunyal Sportsman's Club which had been named after Legatee Donovan Joynt (see also Cat.No. 01352). The accompanying typed note, dated March 1983, identifies Lieutenant Colonel Donovan Joynt VC and Captain Mick Moon VC as 'the only surviving VC winners from World War 1 in Victoria.' The photo was used in a Herald newspaper article on 29 March 1983 (item 01603). The photo shows a group of Legatees who attended the 13th Annual Legacy Club Conference held in April 1940 in Launceston. The names are not known. The Legacy conference was held periodically, often annually, and allowed Legatees from across Australia to gather together. The aim of the annual conference was an exchange of ideas and methods of carrying out Legacy functions, and to form general policy for cooperation between clubs and groups. From TROVE. Delegates from other clubs. Visitors from Melbourne, Sydney, Bendigo, Newcastle, Geelong, and Hobart, together with a strong representation from the Launceston Club will take part in the conference, which will open in the Anzac Hostel Hall on Saturday. Delegates and observers will arrive in Launceston this week to be present at the ceremony of presenting the Charter of Legacy to the Hobart Club on Wednesday evening. The organisation in Hobart has been functioning for many years as the Remembrance Club, but has now accepted the invitation of Legacy to join up, using as its new name "Remembrance Club (Hobart Legacy)." ' The man second from left on the front row is Frank Wittman, who was the smallest man to have enlisted in the 1st AIF and as such the shortest Legatee. The photos show Legatee Chas Wilks visiting Legatee Morrie Tonkin in hospital and presenting a certificate to mark his 50 years of service to Legacy. From the note it seems he gave his Presidential badge back to Melbourne Legacy. Legatee M.J.G Tonkin was president in 1952. A drawing done by artist Pat Hanna and sent to friends at Legacy as a postcard. It could be a self portrait or a caricature of another Legatee. It was stored with other items including a letter to Frank (L/- Frank Doolan who was making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project - see items 01400 to 01403). Pat Hanna was an entertainer, comedian, artist and producer of revues, plays and movies. One of his first revues was performed just after the armistice in France. A popular stage show was 'Diggers' that performed around Australia post-war it was adapted into a film in 1931. He was asked to pose for photographer Jack Cato for the iconic image of a digger shown in 01400. He was born George Patrick Hanna, 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand and served in the First World War, was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and was involved with Legacy for many years.Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and an artist and producer. A list of the presidents of the Intermediate Legacy Club and the dates of tenure. The list might be incomplete as it stops at 1964. The first president was Legatee EM Kennedy from 15th March 1929. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee. A newspaper article about Operation Float in The Age on 28 March 1960. Operation Float in 1960 was when Junior Legatees were taken on an outing to the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Club. The clubs would provide the children with a trip in their boats. In later years they would visit naval ships. Melbourne Legacy provided many outings and experiences for Junior Legatees. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. Photos of junior legatee girls demonstrating dance, gymnastics, and marching at the Annual Demonstration. Melbourne Legacy, Junior Legatees conducted Annual Demonstrations/Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. These photos are at the Olympic Swimming Stadium, which was used in 1959 to 1962. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. An album of newspaper clippings and photos compiled to thank Legatee Philip E Potts when he was leaving Melbourne in 1928. L/ Potts was president of Legacy in 1927-28. The album was compiled by Legatee Frank Doolan. The articles included the first annual demonstration being held on 28 March 1928 with 300 junior legatees performing. Legatee Aaron Beattie was in charge with help from Mrs Gillies and Jim Tierney. Also articles about the proposed building of the Shrine of Remembrance and the appeal for funds. One page shows pictures of a social event held on the Burns Philp ship 'Marella'. Another photo of Marella is in the collection. Legatee Potts was manager of the old-established shipping firm Burns, Philip and Co Ltd. He also was president of the Melbourne 'Highland Pipe Band, a councillor of the Melbourne Scots and English Speaking Union, and a member of the Rotary Club. For many years Legacy was invited to bring junior legatees to Government House for for an enjoyable Legacy Christmas party. There were entertainers, carousels and often a train ride. And the joy of a Christmas present for each child. This photo was published in the March 1945 newsletter so was from the party in December 1944. The caption says 'Oscar the bull was a great success with the children at the Junior Legacy Club's Christmas party in Government House grounds. The fact that Oscar wore boots did not in the least detract from his popularity, judging by the expressions of glee.' The governor at the time was His Excellency Sir Frederick Mann. This photo shows an entertainer dressed as a cow and the children on the lawn of Government House. There is also a report by the Chairman of Committees on the activities of the Club, news from other clubs, and a clothing appeal. A regular event for the widows was a concert in Fitzroy gardens performed by the Police Band. Usually held in March each year. The police horse Gendarme was a regular favourite and his horse float can be seen in the background. These photos show the widows enjoying the music and performers. President of the Melbourne Widows Club Irene Noll is seen in the first photo in floral top and black skirt. Legatees Geoff Swan and Charles Munnerley are standing by the microphone as Legatee Eddie Jowett reads something. Legatee Jowett regularly hosted and sang at monthly concerts at Legacy House. An article in the Answer in June 1994 shows Irene Noll at the concert in the same clothes so the date is assumed to be 1994. The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. The letter dated 16 March 1935 was to the trustees of the Howard and Georgina Benevolent Fund outlines the way the fund was to be used at the President's discretion within the guidelines provided by Legatee Berry. That included members of Melbourne Legacy Club or Junior Legatees, or any returned soldier that couldn't obtain help anywhere else. From the pencil note it was never sent. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. According to a 1928 report on the early days of Legacy (01478) as well as the physical training classes provided by Legacy for the boys physical welfare there was also cricket, football, tennis, Lacrosse and swimming clubs, all supervised and coached. This is a study of Melbourne Legacy by the author William Paul Healy, from April 1973 to March 1975. The author was interested because of the reputation gained by Legacy over the preceding 50 years, for successfully delivering welfare services by volunteers to widows and their dependant children. He titled it 'The Task-Focused Volunteer: An Evaluation of the Work of the Legacy Club of Melbourne'. The aim of the study was to describe, analyse, explain and evaluate the work of Legacy. This has been done at great length and in summary the great value of Legacy is in the continuity of a Legatee with the one family i.e. the legatee maintained contact with the family through school, beginning work/university and other milestones in the life of a dependant family. It was thought that families in receipt of Legacy services functioned at a higher level than those who do not receive such services.Significant in that Legacy was seen as providing a high quality service. Members of the Board of Management in 1938 included Syd Birrell, Carl Carleton, Jack Barnes, Os Gawler, H Nicholson, W(Bill) Pearce, Lionel Wallace, Brian Armstrong, Eric Harding, Doug McKinlay. Text below the photo shows it was presented to J G Gillespie to commemorate his year as president, which was 1938. Another copy of this photo exists that is labelled as Board of Management 1949 - which is incorrect. Legatee Eric Harding OBE, MM, was also a member of the Limbless Soldiers' Association of Victoria as he lost a leg as a gunner in France in WW1. He served with the Australian Field Artillery in the original Anzac Corps. Despite loosing a leg he was active enough to ride with a Light Horse Party at the head of Melbourne's 1975 Anzac Day march. A close up photo of a lady drinking a cup of tea. The photo featured in the March 1992 edition of the Widows' Newsletter which names her as Sue Sargent - Volunteer Helper. The date is assumed as 1991 due to the reference number from the photographic studio 911030 could mean 30 October 1991, along with 00645, 00646, 00647, 00648, 00649, 00651 and 00661 - 00666.Keesing Photographers took a series of photos on the same day of various ladies and some were committee members at different clubs. According to the paper label "Over 300 Legatees participated in the ANZAC Day march commemorating Legacy's 70th Anniversary." Photos show the Legatees assembling before the march, including Legatee Barbara Leach with a tray of Rosemary for the marchers to wear. The sign says "A gift from Legacy". The Legacy Widows club puts together the trays of rosemary prior to Anzac Day to give to the public. (See also 00754 and 00756).
