Embarked for England 4.8.17, hospital on 1.11.17 with scabies, embark for France 14.11.17, transfer to 2nd Aust Tunneling Coy 28.7.18, WIA on 30.9.18 GSW to leg. Discharged from the AIF on 4.5.19. He was also entitled to the War medal 1914-19. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), also known as the "Red Baron", was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories. The evidence indicates that he was shot down by ground fire from Australian troops. Albert VIctor Grinton No 5024 enlisted in the 21st reinforcements 13th Batt AIF on 21.1.16 age 18 years. When he got to England he transferred to the 38th Batt to be with his brother Jack. Embarked for France 22,11,1916, WIA 28.5.1917 SW Face, rejoin unit 19.6.1917, WIA 12.10.1917, rejoin unit 10.5.1918, promoted CPL 3.9.1918, hospital 14.9.1918 Nasal Obstruction, rejoin unit 3.10.1918, promoted Sgt 7.10.1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for actions near Clery on 31.8.18. John William Grinton enlisted in C Coy 38th Batt AIF on 3.2.16 age 23 years. Both became Sergeants and both were WIA twice. They came home together on the same boat. Part of the Grinton collection which included hundreds of negatives and developed photos taken by Jack during the War. The tin was owned by Jack Grinton No 1043, 38th Batt AIF. This tin held hundreds of his nitrate negative photos for many years that he took during the Great War which remained virtually intact as away from light and air until rediscovered early 21st century. This collection became part of the exhibition “A Camera on the Somme”which was 80 selected photos to make a story with 7 story boards with photos to compliment. A book was also produced to accompany the travelling exhibition. The framed collection are Cat No’s 7100P to 7179P and 7180 to 7187.
