The postcard image depicts the conning tower of a Japanese midget submarine that was involed in the attack on Sydney Harbour on May 31st, 1942.On the 31st of May 1942, in the midst of World War Two, Sydney found itself under attack from three Japanese midget submarines that entered Sydney Harbour under the cover of night. The first submarine became trapped in anti-torpedo nets and the third submarine was sunk in Taylor Bay. The second submarine fired on the heavy cruiser the USS Chicago. This album was possibly sent as a Christmas gift to the Answer family in 1942. It was compiled by Corporal Eric Edward Answer (born 5.3.1906) - VX 26353 of the 9 Division Provost Company.He was born in Wairewa Victoria and ensilsted on 27.6.1940. He was discharged on 26.1 1944. His next of kin is noted as Muriel Answer.These personal photographs give an insight into the human element of World War 11 ensuring that those who were part of the Orbost community and played a vital role during this time are remembered.A photo album of 20 photo. The original aircraft depicted was assigned to the US 5th Air Force, 49th Fighter Group, 9th fighter Squadron and flown by Lt. Reynold from May 1942 until early August 1942. The aircraft was nicknamed "Stardust". On 8th August 1942 this P40 was assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force as Kittyhawk A29-136 and assigned the code letter "N", retaining the "Stardust" nickname. Air raid wardens managed groups of people in using air raid facilities that were constructed throughout the district.
