This is an old tin which has been used as a first aid box by a scout group in Warrnambool. It appears to date from about the 1950s. Today there are two scout groups in Warrnambool and one in Allansford. The Warrnambool Norfolk group has its headquarters at the corner of Raglan Parade and Kepler Street and the Warrnambool Tooram group has halls at the corner of Timor and Banyan Streets and in Otway Road. This tin is of minor interest as an item that belonged to a local scout group in the mid 20th century.This is a rectangular metal box painted cream but with the paint peeling. The metal handle is rusted and there are two metal catches. On the side is a red cross taped on and a red cross painted on the top. There is a black hand-painted name. 2/1st North Australia Observer Unit 1942-1945 The Nackeroos - During the second World War the 2/1st North Australia Observer Unit guarded Northern Australia against Japanese incursions. The unit established positions in remote areas and carried out patrols on foot and horseback, reporting back by wireless.The unit was barely 550 strong, and with their headquarters in Katherine, in the Northern Territory, they were given the task of patrolling northern Australia to look for signs of enemy activity. The men made use of the knowledge of local Aboriginals and maintained coast watching outposts. As the threat of invasion passed, the unit was reduced in strength and disbanded in March 1945. This sign was displayed at the 1st International Domiciliary Nursing Congress which was hosted by the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS).The 1st International Domiciliary Nursing Congress was hosted by Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS). Mrs. D.(Elsa) Hallenstein, President of RDNS, presided over the opening ceremony with the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon John Gorton opening the Congress. It was held in Melbourne and ran from the 1st to the 8th of February 1970. Many delegates came from around Australia and overseas; from the World Health Organisation; from the North American continent; from Europe, from Asia and from the Pacific. The Military Merit Medal was founded by Emperor Franz Joseph 1st on March 12 1890. The Medal was awarded in both peacetime for meritorious service and in wartime for outstanding acts. ( Including bravery or military merit).Historic Significance.Bronze, Silver or Gold Medal with bust of the reigning Emperor on the obverse side. The words "SIGNUM LAUDIS" (Latin for "Sign of Praise") on the reverse. It is surrounded by a wreath of half - laurels and half- oak leaves. The medal is surmounted by a dual crowns "Karl 1st type" and worn from a tri-fold ribbon. On the ribbon there are two crossed swords.
