This book was used by the Orbost Manchester United Independent Order of Oddfellows. Friendly Societies were founded in the Australian Colonies in the mid-19th Century by immigrants from England who had been members in Societies which dated back to the 18th Century. Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. This record book was created in a time of 'look after yourself' as the Colonial Governments did not provide pensions or benefits. This item reflects those times.A hard back book with a red and blue mottled cover and a dark blue spine. Brought to Australia in the 1950s by Dutch migrants. These coffee grinders were in common use in the 1940s amd 1950s as an altrrnative to wall-mounted coffee grinders. They were operated by clamping the grinder between one' knees. The drinking of coffee is a highly social ritual among Dutch people. They brought this ritual with nthem to Australia as is evidenced by the number of coffee grinders and other coffee psraphernalia donated to the DAHC.Coffee grinder, wooden body, metal top. Brown card with two red stripes vertically in the central area of the card, printed up as Australian Civilian Registration (British Subjects) Identity Card for use during the Second World War (WWII). Has form number CR3. Date of printing given in bottom left hand corner as 12.43. Issued to "Denmead Leslie James 133 Glenlyon Rd. Bwick" (Brunswick) in Sept. 1945. Issued at No. 1 P.D. Depot, Ransford. Has two punch holes along the top edge - probably not in at the time of issue. Has signature of holder and witness (E.A Showers) to signature of rear. Gives conditions of use etc. Also has Identity Card Number "V5 M10 B10551" on rear for office purposes "R45/50" and in a column against the letter C "50728"various - see above and image filestrams, tramways, identity cards, second world war, world war ii

Book has dark red cloth covers, gold block titled on front only, with tipped in end papers, title page, contents pages, three introductory pages by author, 127 pages of text, five index pages and six folded sheets interspersed in book with wiring or controller diagrams. Book finished with red tinted edging. Book published by The Electrical Review Limited, London in 1920, 8th edition. On inside end paper, has ESCo Ballarat office stamp with date 30/9/1924, a glued in white sheet of paper with handwritten notation "To be returned to Mr. P. Bath Motorman No. 51, City Office 9.1.63" and on bottom left hand corner a "Tait Book Co. 90 William St. Melbourne" label that has also been glued in. Snow Crystal Inn was built by Milan Kovacic in the early 1950s. Milan, born in Hungary, had the early days of his life in Victoria at the Bonegilla Migrant Camp in Wodonga. He became a ski instructor and one of his earliest students was Skippy St. Elmo.
