Bridge construction Eltham-Diamond Creek road over the Diamond Creek (Wattletree Road), Eltham, September 1959 After some delay in receiving funds, work started on the bridge approaches in early September 1959. Traffic was still using the old bridge upstream. On Sunday, 20 September 1959, heavy flooding occurred in the stream and at 3:53 pm the old bridge was washed out. This photo was taken the day after. To the left is the Diamond Creek side abutment for the new Wattletree Road bridge under construction. Where the trucks are parked is near the present-day intersection with Progress Road. At the time Progress Road did not exist and was merely a road reserve on the map. The bridge was originally built as a replacement for an older private bridge built by a man named Foley around 1880. In 1911 Heidelberg and Eltham agreed to share the costs to build a new bridge. Construction began in June 1915 and it was officially opened by Cr. Taylor on Cup Day, November 1915.Record of various Shire of Eltham infrastructure works undertaken during the period of 1952-1962 involving bridge and road reconstruction projects, sometimes with Eltham Shire Council Project Reference numbers quoted. It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022). In many situations, the photos provide a tangible visible record of infrastructure that existed throughout the early days of the Shire. Former family home of Mr. Frederick Eldred (Fred) Griffith in the 1950s, where present day Griffith Park is situated on the Yarra River at Eltham. Fred Griffith was also a Councillor (1945, 1951-1953) and former Shire President (1951) of the Shire of Eltham. Faye Walker (nee Harris) spent her first ten years living in the house. She recalls "there was a huge tin shed to the rear but toward the east of the house. I assume this is what people were thinking of when reference was made to the ‘’packing shed’. When I was small in the 50s, the shed was no longer being used for fruit packing but by the Griffith family as storage. Many of the pear trees remained but were no longer a commercial venture. [from a contemporary report:] The Shire of Eltham District Society's Parade float theme for 1989 was gold mining which, of course, was a most important aspect of our early history. Bruce Ness assembled the float with items loaned by Warrandyte Historical Society and quite a bit of his own ingenuity. Phyllis MacDonald also arranged for the Victorian Folk Music Club to provide us with appropriate musical accompaniment. To provide a level of authenticity, a present day prospector, Jack Hodson, was in charge of the equipment on the float. Weatherboard house with cast ironwork decoration on the verandah. Three women, two men and four children with rocking horse stand for a photograph. Family unknown. Yarra Brae Park was situated on Yarra Brae Road, off Sweeneys Lane, Eltham. Research in historical newspapers reveals that the Hautrive family lived there 1904-1906, followed by the Bindoon family in 1907. In the 1930s it was occupied by Hubert Rutter, his wife Beulah and four children. Hubert was an Eltham Shire Councillor. On 13 January 1939, the house burned down in the Black Friday bushfires. After the fire, the family relocated to Toorak. Eltham Community Festival, 4-13 August 1978 Newsletter No. 3 September 1978 Eltham Community Festival. This year’s Eltham Community Festival was held from August 4th to 13th. The society was involved with the Warrandyte Historical Society in arranging an exhibition at the Community Centre and also provided notes and a map for a self-guided walking tour of historic buildings and locations around Eltham. Copies of notes will continue to be available from the Eltham Shire Offices and the tour may be under-taken at any time. The exhibition was divided into two sections. The Eltham Society displayed early photographs associated with the walking tour, whilst the Warrandyte Society showed their photographs and artefacts of the Warrandyte gold era. An outstanding feature was the large "blow-up" photos of early Warrandyte. This seat was placed in Alistair Knox Park in commemoration of the end of the Shire of Eltham after Victorian Council amalgamations with the words "Shire of Eltham 1871-1994" included on the back wooden plate of the seat. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years. The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light.
