Unlike regular postage stamps, Cinderella stamps were privately produced and had could not be used for postage. They were produced for a number of reasons:- 1. as souvenirs of a specific event, 2. as promotional tools either for a business our tourism, 3. to raise funds for a particular project. Ref. The Royal Princess Theatre, 73 View St., Bendigo, was designed by William Charles Vahland and opened on 31/8/1874. It had a capacity of 2000 and was lit by gas until 1898 when electricity became available. The original proprietors were John Croley (1827-1899) and William (Billy) Heffernan (1840-1899). It was Bendigo's first permanent picture house in 1910, with it's first showing being the silent film "The Desert Song". It closed in 1930 before reopening in 1936 after being rebuilt in the Art Deco style. Born in 1903, Norman Penrose studied at the Bendigo School of Mines. A painter and a teacher, he lived in Bendigo most of his life.Watercolour painting by Norman Penrose titled "Sand Pit Fortuna." It shows a mining sand pit and the Fortuna mine in the background. The painting is signed on the bottom right-hand side. The painting is under glass in a dark brown wooden frame.
