The fashion originated in France in the early 1930s, and slowly caught on in other countries, although was often controversial. The McIntyre Collection forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing worn by women in the Cohen and McIntyre families. The collection is significant historically and aesthetically, demonstrating changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. It includes the work of a large number of Melbourne designers from the 1950s to the 1980s. Dark green coloured taffeta and organza short evening culottes with separate black velvet evening jacket. The outfit, confidently dated to 1985, is from one of the earliest ready-to-wear collections by Martin Grant, who began his career in Melbourne at the age of 16.A note by Dione McIntyre, describing the outfit, of which this item is a part reads: "Martin Grant outfit, including black satin and velvet shoes. A safari helmet was also called a pith helmet as it was made of sholapith material. It was first used by the Spanish forces in the Spanish East Indies and by the mid 19th century was used extensively by military forces in tropical countries and then became common civilian headwear for westerners in the tropics by the end of the 19th century. Safari helmets are still won today in tropical countries by both men and women and are part of the dress or ceremonial uniform for many members of the armed forces and music bands. This helmet has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposesThis is a pith or safari helmet made from a cream-coloured stiffened fabric. The crown has six segments with a small dome on top with three arch-shaped breathing holes. Around the edge of the crown is a white or stiffened cream cloth (puggaree) intertwined in layers and stitched onto the crown. The brim is peaked at the front and oblong at the back and tapered from front to back. The pleated cloth band is stiffened and has two brass clips. The edge of the brim is reinforced, perhaps with wire. Inside the helmet is the brass base of the top dome in eight circular sections. Jane and Samuel Delley emigrated to Australia in 1857. By 1870 they and their young family had settled in the area at the entrance of the Fyans Valley and on the west of Fyans Creek. There they built a home and recognising the needs of passing travellers and timber-getters, they established Delley's Inn, providing food and refreshments to all in need.Timber dwelling with bark roof and two chimneys, one at either side of the house.
