Functional Object - Ticket punch
Demonstrates how tram tickets could be punched and the manufacture of ticket punches.Brass cast, chrome plated, machined, device or ticket punch, used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Placed a round hole in the ticket. Spring loaded, consists of two main parts with a pin & spring in addition. . Chrome plate has been partly worn off. Secured by three screws, which are unusual. There are no manufacturer markings or numbers on the punch. Punch is very heavy in construction compared to other punches in the collection. 1099.1 - photocopy of an article in The Courier, Ballarat Tuesday Feb. 9 1988, page 17 of the house that contained Ballarat ESCo tram No. 12 in the Tuesday Heritage Column of the newspaper. Contains a photograph of the house containing the tramcar. Newspaper Clipping details the former occupiers, the Rayner family, the construction of the extensions around the tramcar, family use, family history and some details of the family members and other local history. The copy of the newspaper Clipping has numerous pin holes in the corner and the rust marks due to use on a display on Tram No. 12 in a display board in the depot from about 1991 to 1998. From a copy made from the newspaper Clipping collection held by Alan Bradley. 1099.2 - copy made March 1999 of the same Clipping for record purposes and to have a good copy. (2 copies held). Also has a review by John Hindle of the "Storming St. Kilda by Tram", presented by TheatreWorks aboard a special tram for St. Kilda, from the Herald Newspaper dated 15/3/1988. Photo of the Lister's Junction Service Station, overhead and tram track at the intersection of Bridge St, Main St and Victoria St. (Stones Corner). Shows the style of overhead construction, signal contactors, the service station, its clock and associated advertising. Three ladies are crossing the road. Photo taken on 23.4.1950 at 3.05pm. Advertising on service station has Atlantic, Shell, and Castrol. Has multiple petrol dispensing bowsers. Clocks has directional arrows for Melbourne and Geelong. Tram tracks visible. Copies of reports and notes prepared by Hal Cain on the moving of trams to the new depot, depot access track construction and the construction of the depot. All on foolscap sheets, toner photocopies, with punched holes on the left hand edge. 914.1 - copy of a memo on the method of moving tramcars from the old SEC Depot to the Society's new building. Written on BTPS letterhead (see item 913) over two sheets of paper. Photocopied onto a single foolscap sheet of paper. In top right hand corner has notation "written by HAL 22/12/71". Last point - number 9 did not copy well and has lost most of last line - see 914.2 (Note by WAD - basis of method used for the movement of the first tram, but found to be very difficult and likely to damage the tramcars. Led to the laying of a temporary access track to the edge of the Wendouree Parade, which was used for the movement of the following five tramcars.) 914.2 - as for 914.1 but includes good text of point 9. 914.3 - copy of a report written by Hal Cain about the "Construction of connecting track in South Gardens Reserve from the Society's Depot to Wendouree Parade". On foolscap paper, with two punch holes in the left hand edge. In top right hand corner has notation "written by HAL 22/12/71". Black & White Photograph of one of the ESCo Toastracks being assembled in the Exhibition Buildings in Grenville St., north of the Alfred Hall in 1905. The other open Toastrack or Summer tramcar is behind this tram, with other California Combination cars on the sides. The trams have yet to be fitted with wheels or equipment, including headlights. Note the front dash panel has been painted, but no headlight opening or cut out. The print for this photograph made from a copy negative of page 454 of the Australasian, August 19, 1905 in 1993. Print includes caption (all in caps) "Summer Traffic Car: to be used in trips to and from the Gardens. It is without sides, and has reversible backs. Ballarat Electric Tram Service". See Reg. Item No. 763. Copy 1 made for No. 12 display 3/99. 754.1 - added 6/12/2004. Same print with details of source written on the rear. ARHS Vic. Div. Photo Number 771/24, ex Latrobe Library. Photographed outside the Wendouree Parade depot, late 1887, with 16 workmen standing or lying around the tramcar. Builders Photo. Tram is lettered "BALLAARAT TRAMWAY CO LIMITED". A sign on the advertising board says "Duncan & Fraser, Builders, Ballaarat". The men around the tram are dressed in trade clothes, with aprons, including carpenters, painters and blacksmiths. Black and white photograph of the interior a W2 end saloon showing the longitudinal seats upholstered in leather. Photo taken at Preston Workshops, shows interior fit out at the time of construction, with central strap hangers (leather), light fittings. Tram would appear to have been service for some time as it is fitted with advertisements and M&MTB posters. Destination City, 4th Edition page 42 notes that W2 329, 331, 332, 335 were fitted with leather seating in 1929.
