A menu card for a dinner given to farewell Legacy President Philip Potts as he left to be part of the Scottish delegation in March 1928. Legatee Potts was the current Legacy President and this promotion meant he had to step down and Legatee CH Peters took over the rest of the 1927-8 tenure. The text of menu has joking references to other Legatees which shows their comradeship and camaraderie. An album of significant events in March 1928 was compiled and presented to Legatee Potts by Legatee Frank Doolan. (see 02134). The album includes the first annual demonstration, appeals for funds to build the Shrine and farewell notices from Legacy newsletters.A record that Legatees held very significant positions in their lives outside of Legacy. An album of newspaper clippings and photos compiled to thank Legatee Philip E Potts when he was leaving Melbourne in 1928. L/ Potts was president of Legacy in 1927-28. The album was compiled by Legatee Frank Doolan. The articles included the first annual demonstration being held on 28 March 1928 with 300 junior legatees performing. Legatee Aaron Beattie was in charge with help from Mrs Gillies and Jim Tierney. Also articles about the proposed building of the Shrine of Remembrance and the appeal for funds. One page shows pictures of a social event held on the Burns Philp ship 'Marella'. Another photo of Marella is in the collection. Legatee Potts was manager of the old-established shipping firm Burns, Philip and Co Ltd. He also was president of the Melbourne 'Highland Pipe Band, a councillor of the Melbourne Scots and English Speaking Union, and a member of the Rotary Club. This book was written to cover the whole of the sub intermediate syllabus for Victoria. Form 3 or Year 9 in todays levels This was an introduction to the higher levels of maths, e.g. Leaving certificate. This book is a very good indicator of what was taught in Victorian SchoolsThis has social significance because it shows what students of the Mt Beauty secondary schools would have been learning during the 1950's. This book has been donated by Wilma Davies, a local idenity, and has her usuage in the book. Therfore this makes this item very good interpretive capacity. It is also now out of print and there is only a couple of copies for public viewing that the Victorian State Library, so it a rare collectible book. Faded blue cover with back writing. A second copy was donated by Gil and Heather Richardson as part of the Mary Gilbert collection. The Commonwealth Hotel opened New Year's Day 1901. Mr Jasper Drew held the first licence. He owned it from 1901 until 1919. Thomas Marshall was the owner from 1919 - 1972. After 1972 it became Marshall's Hotel Pty Ltd . From 1981 there have been various owners.
