This book contains verses written by Tilly Aston. Matilda Ann (Tilly) Aston was a blind writer and teacher who was born in Carisbrook, Victoria in 1873. She became totally blind at the age of seven. She learned Braille and gained her Matriculation Certificate, spending a short time at Melbourne University. She helped to establish the Victorian Association of Braille Writers and to found the Association for the Advancement of the Blind. She was the first Secretary and later President of the latter association. She was appointed the Head of the School for the Blind in Melbourne and retired from this position in 1925. She published several books of verse and prose. There is a Parliamentary electorate in Victoria called Aston. This book is of considerable interest because the author, Tilly Aston, has an important place in Australian literature. The book, ‘Maiden Verses’ has a local Warrnambool connection as it contains a poem written about Warrnambool, a town which Tilly Aston visited on occasions.This is a hard cover book of 146 pages. It is a book of poems written by Tilly Aston. The cover is dark red with the printing on the spine and on the cover in gold lettering. There is at least one page at the front of the book torn out. There is a receipt for the purchase of the book pasted on to the inside of the front cover. The date of the receipt made out to ‘John F. Watts’ is for three shillings and sixpence (1900). George Edwin Wells was born in Oxford in 1826. He served an apprenticeship as a coachbuilder and in 1841 he went to New Zealand. He was returning to England in 1848 when he changed his mind in Singapore and turned around and came to Melbourne. He operated a store with Mr W Gibbs and when gold as discovered they left their wives in Melbourne and went to the gold fields of Ballarat in 1851. At this time George was newly married to Catherine Kiely. In 1852 the two men were at the Golden Gully area of the Fryers Creek gold fields, they then move to Bendigo, initially to White Hills before settling in Long Gully. They then brought their patient wives, who had only had visits from their husbands, to Bendigo. George had several successful mining ventures in Bendigo. He died in 1898. One of his sons, Alfred, married Margaret Rotherham in NSW where he was living. Alfred died in 1911 leaving Margaret with a young family. She moved to Bendigo to be nearer to family support. Alfred and Margaret's daughter, Elma Winslade Wells 91904 - 19/1/1988) became a teacher and was posted to Camp Hill Primary School. She was also heavily involved in the Scout movement in the Bendigo area.Blue hardcover scrapbook belonging to the Wells family. (Elma Wells). Grace Elizabeth Jennings Carmichael (1867-1904), poet and nurse, was born on 24 February 1867 at Ballarat, Victoria, daughter of Archibald Carmichael, a miner from Perthshire, Scotland, and his wife Margaret Jennings, née Clark, from Cornwall, England. . About 1880 the family moved to Gippsland where Henderson managed a station near Orbost. Grace learned to love the Gippsland forest. She began to express in verse her understanding of the sights, scents and sounds of the bush, often writing in some remote clearing, her manuscripts stored for privacy in a hollow trunk. The Bairnsdale Advertiser published her first story, and the Weekly Times an early poem; then on 28 November 1885 her poem 'The Old Maid' was published in the Australasian under her pen name Jennings Carmichael. Encouraged by its editor, David Watterston, Grace sent nearly all her subsequent verse to that newspaper. Named to honour the work of John and Elizabeth Gould, 'The Gould League of Bird Lovers' was formed in 1909. It was originally set up to prevent bird egg collecting and to educate for the protection of Australian birds. Gould League members were recruited via schools and received membership certificates and badges. Members were encouraged to enter competitions in bird mimicry, write stories and poems and attend 'bird-day concerts'. This certificate belonged to Kevin Legge. The Gould League has made a significant impact on generations of Australians and their environmental attitudes. Being a Gould league member as a child in primary school gave children the opportunity to belong to a group that was learning about and protecting native bushland and its wildlife. Although not operating some Australian states the Gould League still functions in Victoria.A Gould League of Bird Lovers of Victoria membership certificate for Kevin Legge. It has colourful illustrations of native Australian birds on a pale yellow background. The illustrations are by A.T. Mockridge, an early 20th century Melbourne commercial artist and portraitist. The Springthorpe Memorial is the most important monument in the Boroondara General cemetery. It commemorates Annie Constance Springthorpe (nee Inglis), the wife of Dr. John Springthorpe (1867-1897). Following his wife’s death, Dr john Springthorpe worked with John Longstaff to produce a book, entitled ‘In Memoriam’ for his personal collection, for his children and for immediate family members. Designed by Longstaff, it contained poems, photographs, drawings and idealised memories of Annie and their life together. This is one of two copies of In Memoriam in the collection of the Kew Historical Society. It is believed to be one of eight copies held in public collections. Copies catalogued on Trove include one at the State Library of Victoria and another at the University of Melbourne. Idylls of the King,first published between 1859 and 1885, is a cycle of twelve narrative poems by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892) who was the Poet Laureate from 1850. It retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him. The book was given by Emmie Gibbs as a Christmas gift to Hilda Wehner. This is a book given to Margaret Davidson in 1875 by her aunt, Mrs J. Davidson. Margaret Milne Davidson (1839-1928) was the eldest child of James and Isabella Davidson and she was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland. She came to the Warrnambool area in 1850. The property, ‘Woodend’, was near Cassadys Bridge (Caramut Road today). The aunt, Mrs J. Davidson would be the wife of John Davidson, the brother of James and a farmer at ‘Rosebank’, Woodford. The portraits of John and James Davidson are on the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. This book is of interest because of its inscription. The book is connected to the Davidson families, prominent in Warrnambool’s pioneer history.This is a hard cover book of 832 pages. This is a reprint of the first edition of The Weekly Times – originally printed on September 11th 1869. The paper was first published by the Daily Telegraph Newspaper Company and was described as ‘a Journal of literature, sport, agriculture, science and politics’. In 1892 it was acquired by the Herald Newspaper group which has been publishing The Weekly Times ever since. The Weekly Times is now regarded as the most important newspaper especially published for those living outside of Melbourne in rural Victoria. This newspaper reprint is of minor interest as it is a copy of the first edition of a newspaper that is widely read in rural Victoria, including Warrnambool and the Western District.This is a reprint of the first edition of the Melbourne newspaper, the Weekly Times (1869). It has 16 pages and includes news items, advertisements, black and white sketches, poems, agricultural information, ladies’ columns etc. The first page has the masthead and motto of the paper – ‘The Liberal Reviseth Liberal Things’.
