As a constant observer of the natural world, I am constantly observing and drawing trees. While I never intend to anthropomorphise objects in nature, I often see trees as having strong ‘characters’. As I was looking through my journal recently I noticed a page where I had drawn a group of trees standing in a line. This immediately gave me the idea for my lithograph Family Tree. The Claxton Monument and Fountain in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens was recommissioned in 1997 after extensive renovations and a computerised engraving system was purchased for the labelling of plants.The Claxton Monument is an important part of Ballarat Botanical Gardens historic statuary. The plaque in the photograph commemorates the planting of a Druids Oak in 1870.In 2009, doubt surrounds the planting of the Druids Oak tree. Was this the first Druids Oak to be planted in Ballarat? "Birthing Trees is culturally significant to Aboriginal people. Women would give birth in the hollowed out trees. Men were not allowed there as this was women's business. This 800 year old tree and other ancient trees are in the way of a proposed new western district highway. Let's find a way to respect cultural diversity as we all share this one land". >Purchased & acquired for the City of Whittlesea Cultural Collection in 2018. Large black and white photograph mounted on heavy cardboard showing a very large conifer being replanted by a number of people. The original photograph is held at the Melbourne Herbarium and the information provided by them is that, "This photograph was taken after William Guilfoyle became Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, succeeding Baron von Mueller.
