His mother nee Stewart. Worked for East India Shipping Line. In 1828 at 25 years became the mate on the vessel 'Diaden'. Captain Wilson. As Captain of the 'Alice' in 1830 married Eliza Combes. Alice Elizabeth, 1st child, born the same Year. 1833 a son John Stewart was born and unfortunately died one year later. A third child Thomas was born. He sailed on a steam propelled vessel between Sydney and Newcastle. He later took over the ship 'Ceres' and was expected to run the Board of Directors. Sadly health prevailed. The 'Ceres' struck 'Whale Rock' and sank. Captain Martin was in charge at the time. Mr. J. Gardiner offered and overland to Victoria. Other names are; Mrs Coghill, John Coghill,. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the district working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. The Lundy-Clarke family were related to the Price family through the marriage of two Ross sisters - Annie Ross to Edward Joseph Price and Helen Ross to Robert Lundy-Clarke. Edward Joseph Price took up Lot 1 in the Village Settlement and Robert Lundy-Clarke was persuaded to take up Lot 2. He felt it would be unproductive. He signed it over to Edward Joseph Price and took his family to New Zealand. After his death in 1911 the family returned to the district. The Lundy-Clarke family were related to the Dunbar family as Caroline Dunbar was a sister to Annie and Helen Ross. Agnes Annie Clarke aged 18 daughter of Robert Lundy-Clarke and Helen nee Ross. The Temple sisters Hilda Temple Kerr (1874-1956) and Mabel Stewart Temple (1871-1892) also grew up in Orbost. This joint book of their verse entitled Australian Poetry was published in 1905. This book is of general as well as local interest as it gives short biographies of prominent 19th century Australian men. Included in the book are people of local importance to Warrnambool and district – Dr Fleetwood, Dr Singleton, Rev. George Tait, James Stewart Butters, Stephen Henty and Dr Thomas Scott. This book is important because it has interesting and informative biographies of prominent Australian men of the 19th century but it is of greater importance to Warrnambool’s historians because of its biographies of men who were influential in Warrnambool’s history. It is also of interest that the book has the signature of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Worland was also a great Warrnambool historian, preserving items of historical importance, writing on local history and talking about our history for a number of years in a series of broadcasts on Warrnambool’s 3YB. It is due to him that we have ‘Australian Representative Men’ in our collection today. This is a hard cover book with a black cover and gold-coloured lettering on the spine. The pages are unnumbered. The book contains 107 biographies of well-known 19th century men in Australia, together with their portraits fronted by a piece of tissue paper. The book also has articles on the Federal Council and the Soudan Expedition. The first couple of pages are missing. The cover is a little stained and some of the pages have blotches on them. Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. This letter shows correspondence between the two firms of solicitors and is demanding payment of £500.00 as settlement by Bostock, to the National Bank. This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. The St Peter Chapel opened in 1917. Funding came primarily from the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. The artwork "And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter" was donated by Mr R. Stewart Murray in 1940. This book was a prize awarded to Janet Shade in 1926 by Warrnambool High School. The donor of the prize was Miss Merrett who was a Shorthand and Typing teacher at the school. Janet Shade, born in 1913, was the daughter of James and Gert Shade. She married Stewart Lindsay in 1935. George Langley was the Head Master of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940 This book is of interest because of its association with Warrnambool High School and Janet Shade, George Langley and Miss Merrett. This is a hard cover book of 143 pages. The cover is dark blue with gold lettering and ornamental gold scrolls on the spine and the gold initials of ‘M.B’ on the front cover. There are two book plates inside the front cover and on the first page. They are printed in white and gold tonings and have been filled in with handwriting in black ink.
