Bendigo Teacher's College, along with the Ballarat Teacher's College were the first non-metropolitan teacher colleges. The Bendigo College was established in 1926 and operated out of the Long Gully Primary School. DUring the depression, from 1930 to 1945 the college closed because of the economic climate. The college reopened in 1945 in temporary accommodation adjacent to the Camp Hill Primary School. In 1959 the college moved into purpose built premises in Osbourne St., Flora Hill where it remained until closing in 1973."Pheonix Celebrites for 1956". Ballarat Teachers College commenced in 1926 with 61 students with the aim of providing trained teachers for rural schools. It initially operated from the Dana Street Primary School while the Ballarat East Town Hall was renovated for the colleges use. Golden Square High School opened in temporary accommodation at Camp Hill Primary school in 1960 before its move to a permanent home at 50 MacDougall Rd., Golden Square in 1962. In 1978 it became a 7-10 school and a feeder school to Bendigo Senior Secondary School. A hearing impaired unit was opened in 1986. By 1966 when this poem and article were written by these state school students, the Phillip Island Penguin Parade had become famous and was a regular excursion destination for groups. The poem in rhyming couplets of 4 lines per stanza is typical of its time with human-centric description of the penguins in 'coat and tails', but both the poem and essay also indicate a growing interest in the evolution and behaviour at sea and on land of the Little Penguins. The Gould League of Bird Lovers, Victoria branch, which published these pieces in their 1966 edition of the Bird Lover magazine, was established for both children's 'nature studies' within school curricula, and for adults. The League published many booklets, posters and newsletters for schools and naturalists. The article demonstrates a growing interest in state schools in teaching students about Australian wildlife at the time. Little Penguins are very appealing to humans and given the accessiblity for viewing them at the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, provided teachers and students an ideal springboard for learning. Encouraging both poetry and essay form also indicated a broad approach to allowing students to express their knowledge and attitudes in various ways within the school setting.Also demonstrates the influence of the Gould League of Bird Lovers within the Victorian Education system.Photocopy of article. This edition contained articles on the Legacy Anzac Biscuit Bake Off, the opening of the Vivian Bullwinkel Veterans and Families Wellbeing Centre, and a planting of a Lone Pine seedling at Cobram Secondary College. Plus photos of our programs such as the Student Anzac ceremony, Path of the Horse family day, the walking group, the stamp ladies, adults with a disability program days, widows club gatherings. The Vivian Bullwinkel Veterans and Families Wellbeing Centre on the 3rd floor of Legacy House was opened on the 13 April 2021. It provides the veterans and their families a safe haven to access essential support services such as advocacy, case management and referral pathways whilst inviting them to relax within a 'club' like environment equipped with lounging and children's play areas, and both kitchen and bathroom facilities. It was named in honour of an Australian Army nurse who was the lone survivor of the Bangka Island massacre, and who dedicated her life to nursing. The exceptional portrait of Vivian Bullwinkel on the cover was painted by George Petrou. The end of 1964 saw the first edition of The Peninsula School Journal published. It was intended to be not only a record of School activities but also an opportunity for the students to contribute prose, verse, art and photography. The editing was done by the students under the guidance of Mr Laurie Arter, the Senior English Master. The Pen evolved from an A5 sized booklet (1964-71) to an A4 book (1972-80), then came the renaming of the publication, from the Peninsula School Journal to the Pen (1981). Numbering dropped with 1990 issue.
