Cast Iron lace was made in foundries in most cities. There were 42 such foundries in Melbourne alone. It was cheaper to make than wrought iron. "Pig iron", iron ore was melted in a blast furnace, mixed with alloys and then poured into molds usually made of sand. The alloys needed a minimum of 2% carbon. ‘Eignbrook’, 10 Pembroke Street was built in 1904. It was the home of William Valentine Hill, journalist, who came to this home with his wife Annie (nee Boak) and family of eight children in 1904. Originally the J A & A Templeton Funeral Parlour workshop, it was built in 1930 and was situated by his house in Traralgon.A small timber shop, rectangular in shape with a gabled corrugated iron roof. It has a verandah running along the front of the building, and there is a large billboard on the roof. Three men and a dog stand on the verandah of the Hotel de France in Panton Hill, built about 1864. The hotel, store and post office were all under the same roof and were burned down in a fire in September 1904. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The Horseland store at 87 Main Street Greensborough was a local landmark with its model of a horse on the verandah roof. This store closed late in 2015. The Sunbury News Office was established by the Boardman family initially in Brook Street closer to the station. In 1880 Arthur Boardman opened a bookshop and news agency and in 1882, he printed the first issue of the Sunbury News.The building was on the SW corner of Brook and O'Shanassy Streets. Members of the Boardman family also ran the adjacent business.
